The other day I went to Borough market with Cian, Rob, and Jeremy. I love the market, like it so much that I’m considering moving to Borough just to be near it. It’s amazing the amount of food you find there, a huge variety of cheese, cured meats, exotic meats, fish, Italian products, and many more. I’ve been a huge fan of the Kappacasein stall, with their raclette and the toasted cheese sandwich definitely my favourite one. And if you’re thirsty you should try any of the combinations on The Natural Smoothie Co, even more if it’s a hot summer day.
Kappacasein Stall, Borough Market
Every time I go I try something different, so in this occasion I had two things in mind, usually I try only one and add my all time favourite (Kappacasein toasted cheese sandwich), but this time I had two recommendations and one was a Kangaroo burger, so how can I let this pass. The other recommendation was to try any bubble bap at Maria’s Market Cafe. I didn’t know what bubble was, yeah I know shame on me, two years living here in England and I didn’t know what bubble was. Anyway, now I know it is mashed or I would say crushed potatoes with vegetables (usually leftover) fried in a pan together. So I asked for the bubble, cheese, and bacon bap. It was really good, nothing better than an almost English breakfast in a bap for less than 5 quids, the bap was huge and full of flavour I barely finish it.
Market Square Heroes
So I went all over looking for the kangaroo burgers, I was focus on my goal, try that burger, I was clear that it wasn’t going to be a gourmet option but just the fact to eat a really exotic meat was a rush of adrenaline for me. Finally there it was, Gamston Wood Farm, with kangaroo and ostrich burgers. I did the queue, trying to decide which one to get, the kangaroo one, or the ostrich one, maybe both? Less than five minutes later I was standing there with a kangaroo cheese burger.
The verdict, really tasty flavour, even though that the meat was completely overcooked, the combination of an overcook kangaroo meat with a cold piece of cheese, lettuce, mayo, and mustard surprisingly tasted as heaven.
The damage, 4.5 pounds for the burger with cheese, no drinks, no chips.
The conclusion, really good flavour, now I’m definitely looking for a place that serves a gourmet version of the kangaroo burger. Really good option if you want to try something different, and keep in mind that you’re eating market food. Definitely I will try it again in future visits to the market, I will give them a 5 according to the scale I’m using to check every place, but in terms of market food they should be around 7, they can and must improve the cooking of the meat.
All these kangaroo incident reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Pez Dispenser”, where Jerry plays with a pez dispenser during George’s girlfriend (Noel) piano recital, and Elaine starts to laugh, she thought that Noel wasn’t going to discover her until an old man told both “the male kangaroo doesn’t have a pouch only the female has it, the male has pouch envy, at least give me a pocket” making Elaine to laugh and be discovered.
