Classic British food with style in East Yorkshire

Another recommendation we got in Hull was Boars Nest. A menu full of classic British food with a modern twist in an Edwardian style concept. The place opened over a 100 years ago as a butcher shop, now has transformed to a fancy restaurant in Hull. British cuisine all over the menu, waiters using white gloves, good wine selection and even Barcelona’s finest beer Estrella or as it was introduce to us “the beer that is served in the best restaurant of the world El Bulli”.

Simon Rogers Menu

For starters, I got two dishes first a warm black pudding scotch egg with a tomato sauce, mushroom toast and Cumbrian pancetta, and the second one home made puff pastry with braised tomato, smoked mozzarella, basil and pine nut mayonnaise. As a main, I got the duck breast with buttered spinach and sweet potatoes.

Duck Breast

The black pudding and scotch egg was ok, a little bit dry both the egg and the pudding, I was hopping for a running egg. The puff pastry was superb, excellent flavour, the pastry was crispy, well balanced. Finally, the duck breast was good, a little bit strong seasoning, but in overall was good combination and a successful dish.

View from the Nest

Excellent service, good food, and creative menu from Simon Rogers, the closest you will get of fine dining in Hull.

Nest reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Fire”.

Elaine: And that coffee table is saying, put some coffee on me! I'd like to put some coffee on her. Hot, scalding coffee, right in her face! I swear! This is like working with a contestant from "The Price Is Right"
Jerry: Yeah, that's real interesting. Elaine, listen, tell me if you think this is funny, Men definitely hit the remote more than women, men don't care what's on TV, men only care what else is on TV. Women want to see what the show is before they change the channel, because men hunt and women nest.
