    About Time for a Chinese

Take me to WC2H

It has been a while since the last time I had a cheap and good Chinese food in Chinatown. It is pretty convenient after a night out in Covent Garden, Leicester, or Soho. So I was glad when a colleague recommended going to Cafe de Hong Kong for an Asian treat.

A Chinese Brew

A student dinner, probably due to the prices, quite near from Leicester Square station. Offering Cantonese cuisine with some other strange items on the menu.

Menu

We went for the typical sharing dishes, pork belly, roast duck, fried squid, chicken wings, and Singapore style noodles. The food pretty average, the roast duck was ok, the pork belly average, and the wings, the squid or the noodles pretty common. In conclusion nothing that blew our minds.

Roast Duck

 Wings

Noodles

At least we had the chance to get a couple Tsing Tao and forget about our daily work.

Just a couple

I can't help that every Chinese restaurant reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Chinese Restaurant”

Jerry: Excuse me... We've been waiting here. Now, I know we were ahead of that guy, he just came in.
Bruce: Oh no, Mr. Cohen always here.
Elaine: He's always here? What does that mean? What does that mean?
Bruce: Oh, Mr. Cohen, very nice man. He lives on Park Avenue.
Elaine: Where am I? Is this a dream? What in God's name is going on here?

This restaurant seems to be characterised by deceitful labelling practices. I ate there earlier tonight thinking that the service charge was entirely optional, as all of the menus said "Recommended Gratuity 10%".

However, when it was time to pay the bill, the waitress refused to accept the basic point of the English language that the word "recommended" does not mean "mandatory". The supervisor was summoned and the supervisor threatened that if I did not pay the service charge as well, the establishment would refuse to serve me in future.

I paid the service charge, as I don't feel it is appropriate for me as a Christian to be creating a scene over only £1, but I would seriously advise anyone reading this review against visiting this restaurant: - the deceitful labelling practices when it comes to the service charge make me inclined to wonder if there are other areas in which they try to unscrupulously extract money from customers.

To my mind, the word "recommended" in this context means "recommended ONLY", i.e. optional. If the service charge is only "recommended", it should be entirely possible to simply not pay it without any loss of face.

Don't touch this restaurant with a barge pole.
