I love going to food markets, Borough and Broadway in London, San Miguel in Madrid, so as I heard about the West Side Market in Cleveland I knew I had to go browse the site. The place is packed with more than 100 vendors selling from meat to Russian tea biscuits.
The West Side Market
The market dates from 1840, it was initially open air, but since the last century the yellow brick markethouse with its 137 foot clock tower has become one of the most recognise landmarks in Cleveland. It’s estimated that a million people visit the market. So if you’re around I highly recommend pass by the oldest and most trusted market.
Russian Sweets
Meat
Just opposite from the market there is a Brewpub “Great Lakes Brewing Co”, a typical British pub in the west side of Cleveland with 12 beers on tap (draught), and according to different reviews an excellent burger, so I had to check it out. Pretty sure my friend Mihir would have tried most of their beers, starting with the Lake Erie Monster a pale ale, or the Blackout Stout, finishing with a Eliot Ness an Amber Lager.
Beer Selection
But my mission was other, I couldn’t get distracted by their beer selection, so I went for their menu. Half pound Amish raised beef, prepared fresh daily at the West Side Market, 4 burgers, 5 different cheeses, and 3 toppings to add. I chose the Signature Black and Blue burger and a Highlander Scottish Ale, the burger comes with Anderkase blue cheese and Cajun seasoning, and as extra I added bacon, sauteed onions and mushrooms.
Burgers
Good burger, not the best I’ve ever tried but descent flavour, the burgers come with pub fries, lettuce and onions. In conclusion quite good for pub standards, but not close to be in my top ten.
Black & Blue
Beer reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Sniffing Accountant”.
Kramer: I'll have a brewsky, Charlie.
Bartender: Name's Mitch.
Kramer: Oh, there's nothing like a cold one after a long day, eh?
Barry: Yeah.
Kramer: Oh yeah, I've been known to drink a beer or two. But then again, I've been known to do a lot of things.
