Went back to Chicago for a weekend and exploring my options I bump into Grahamwich, Graham Elliot sandwich parlor. This michelin starred chef, judge in the TV show MasterChef with Gordon Ramsay, also contestant in Top Chef Masters, winner of food and wine magazine Best New Chef in 2004, and nominated 3 times for the James Beard award decided to redifine what a sandwich shop should be.
The place is amazing, I felt like going back to high school, the food is served in a tray, the décor is modern, and the toile, yes the toilet is a huge blackboard with chalk all over so you can leave your print.
I got the pastrami reuben, rutabaga sauerkraut, toasted caraway, gruyere fondue, 1000 island, in marble rye. To join the sandwich g’wich chips (for my British friends crisps) which are homemade and have fresh herbs, bacon bits, cheddar cheese, and ranch powder, and a coffee as the soda mix wasn’t available.
G'wich School Lunch
Pastrami Reuben
G'wich Crisps
The sandwich couldn’t be better, tasty, clean flavours, comfort food taking to the next level could be my best definition, as Graham says in his website, everyone speaks sandwich, one tasty filling and two bready goodness.
So if you’re in the Windy City pass by and have a g’wich popcorn at least, I’m sure you will enjoy it as I did.
George: hey..huh hey Tony, I huh, I just had this brainstorm for us. Can you guess what it is?
Tony: no
George: bowling! what do you see bowling? bowling's insane! bowling is crazy time
Tony: bowling? I don't think so George you get no rush from bowling
George: rush? you want a rush? drop a bowl on your toe my friend, talk about a rush, you'd be throbbing, you'd see visions
Tony: no no no no, I'm thinking.. rock-climbing
George: all right! rock-climbing! J..just the 2 of us? alright! hey I'll make some sandwiches, what what do you like? tuna? peanut butter?
Tony: what, whatever!
