Burger Wars Episode XXXVI: Honesty is Such a Lonely Word in a Burger

In the last couple weeks there has been a little of a buzz about a new place in Brixton Village named Honest Burgers, even though I have read mixed reviews from fellow bloggers, I decided to go and judge by myself. The place is simple, unpretentious, small, a couple tables inside, a waiting bench and a little bit more outside for an al fresco experience or at least to mimic that as you are inside the arcade.

The Honest Place

I usually don’t go to the Village but I have to say is getting a cool vibe, plenty of small options, cafes, artisan restaurants, shops, a good change for the hectic and not colourful market outside. I spotted a Colombian restaurant that might be good to try for a future incursion at the Granville Arcade.

More of the Granville Arcade

Anyway back to business, the menu pretty straight forward, three types of burger, chicken, beef, and a vegetarian option with a couple of combinations, burgers served in a toasted glazed bun with triple cooked chips and rosemary salt. The products free range chicken, 35 day dry aged British beef, and Brixton market’s vegetables.

Menu on the wall

I went for the Honest Burger, beef medium cooked as that is their recommendation, smoked bacon, cheddar, pickled cucumber, red onion relish, and lettuce.

The verdict, good burger bad fries excellent service, the meat was a little overcooked for my taste, but the flavour was nice, the fries not so nice, soggy and soft, so it was a good cop bad cop situation for me, I can’t understand how after triple cooked you can’t have decent fries, it was a big NO for me, actually reminded a line of Barney in How I Met Your Mother “you are the weakest link goodbye! Punchy. The tribe has spoken. Please pack up your knives and go. Your work of art, didn't work for me. You're times up. I have to ask you to leave the mansion. You must leave the chateau. Your tour ends here. You've been chopped! You've been evicted from the Big Brother house. Your desert just didn't measure up. Sashay away! Give me your jacket and leave Hell's kitchen! You did not get a rose. You have been eliminated from the race. You are no longer in the running to be America's Next Top Model. You're fired. Auf Wiedersehen”.

The damage, 9.5 quids for the burger, fries, and a coke.

The conclusion, good burger with lot of potential, but not Meatwagon or Lucky Chip standards yet, there is room for improvement, I will give them a 6.5 in my scale.

Honest Bill

This bad situation reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Little Kicks”.

George: So this Anna called me from out of the blue.
Jerry: Really? I thought you were rebuffed.
George: With extreme prejudice.
Jerry: Maybe Elaine put in a good word for you.
George: No, no. That's just the thing. Anna told me that Elaine said I was one of the worst seeds she'd ever seen.
Jerry: Interesting. She doesn't care for you, then a stern warning, suddenly a phone call. Seems Elaine's made you the bad boy. And Anna digs the bad boy.
George: I'm the bad boy. I've never been the bad boy.
Jerry: You've been the bad employee, the bad son, the bad friend…
George: Yes, yes...
Jerry: The bad fiancĂ©‚, the bad dinner guest, the bad credit risk...
George: Okay, the point is made.
Jerry: The bad date, the bad sport, the bad citizen... The bad tipper!
