Burger Wars Episode LXXXII: Back in Hawksmoor [BurgeReview]

Double dipped? What are you talking about?
George Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Implant”)

I came back to Hawksmoor Seven Dials to get their special third burger. Yes their third burger changes with each season, and for this Spring we got the Five Pork Burger.

Burger Time
The Five Pork comes with a Tamworth pork patty, sausage meat stuffing, smoked bacon, greens, and apple ketchup, all this on a brioche bun. If that’s not enough, as a side you get pork scratching and sausage gravy for dipping and double dipping.

The verdict, delicious, not the healthiest burger but a really tasty one.

The damage, 15 quid for the burger plus fries

The conclusion, the burger was spot on, great flavours, good balance, the pork scratching were a nice touch, triple cooked chips perfect as usual. A solid 9.5 of 10 for Hawksmoor seasonal burger.

Burger Wars Episode LIII: The Fox And Grapes [BurgeReview]

One gastropub I was dying to visit was Fox & Grapes, the place is quite near my flat in Wimbledon Village, holds a Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin guide and was selected as 26 of the top 50 Gastropub Awards. Is the typical country side pub, full of character, and immediately you can feel that something else is going on, and that's a great kitchen on the place. Opened by Chef Claude Bosi same of the two Michelin star Hibiscus, he controls the operations as executive chef while his brother Cedric is the manager.

I got the visit of my cousin Roberto and his girlfriend Eliana, so decided it was a good time to go there and take them to their first gastropub experience. We got a couple pints and ordered food, for starters we share scratchings and scotch egg, the pork scratchings were really nice and crunchy, perfect to go with the pint, the wild boar scotch egg was superb, perfectly cooked, the running yolk was beautiful, and the flavour excellent.

Perfection
As a main I went for the F&G burger, tomato relish and Blackstick blue cheese.

Burger time
The verdict, perfectly cooked the meat, medium rare, with a smoky flavour from the coal josper oven, nice melting blue cheese, the relish was excellent, the home made mayo quite good, nicely balanced, the glazes brioche bun was spot on

The damage, 14.5 quid for the burger with fries

The conclusion, beautiful burger, top in the city, I love the fact that it comes from a gastropub, spot on, the fries were crunchy and soft inside, just brilliant. I will give them almost a perfect score in my scale 9 for my local pub

Roberto got the burger as well, Eliana went for something more traditional Fish and Chips, I had a bite and they were brilliant, perfectly battered, the fish cooked to perfection as well. As side we add some bubble and squeak, which was nice, and the triple cooked chips, surprisingly they weren't as good as the fries.

For dessert we share a pistachio crème brulee and chocolate shortbread, perfect ending for a lovely diner.

Fox reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Understudy”

Elaine: The Korean women were talking about me. I think they were calling me a dog
Jerry: How would you know? You don't speak Korean
Elaine: Because this woman came in with a dog and Ruby called the dog the same word they used when they were pointing at me, “ge ge ge”
Kramer: You know, maybe in Korean dog isn't an insult. Could be like the word fox to us. Oh, she's a DOG!

Pitt Cue Reloaded

A place I really enjoyed last year was Pitt Cue Co. With all the pop up madness, food trucks, night markets, etc, Pitt Cue was one of my favourite and probably one of the only places I ate more than once as I love to try different things so always going to different place to eat. 4 weeks in their new location around Soho. The place is small and cozy, 30 seats in total, less than a dozen stools to sit upstairs, and some tables downstairs, simple decor, liked the lamps upstairs, and what is most important they make you feel like home, is like arriving to a friend’s house, Jamie will make everything to be sure you’re ok, even if that means you need pickle back shots.

The place
Got to the place for lunch, saw the menu for a couple minutes, discuss with Jamie about my reading of Michael Lewis’ Boomerang, then finally decided a to have a Pitt Cue whatever draught some scratching, the beef ribs with braised sprout tops, and a pulled pork bun.

The bar inside
The beer was nice and they go excellent with the scratching, probably not as strong as the pickle back but it was lunch so I prefer to keep it light. The ribs were amazing, the smoky flavour was spot on, they were tender, pretty good, the sprouts where nice, a salty and little bit sour taste that played well with the ribs. The pulled pork bun came with slaw, pickles, and a special sauce it was delicious, good balance with the right touch of sweetness, a hint of spicy, and great juices from the pork, a delight.

Pulled pork bun
Food truck still running and now with a permanent home nearby Carnaby Street , great barbecue, nice cocktails, excellent service, chef Tom Adams and business partner front of the house Jamie Berger will keep high the London barbeque bar for sure.

Lamp attack
The first thing that comes to my mind with Pitt Cue apart from the barbecue is the pickle back shot that reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Red Dot”

Kramer: That is damn good scotch. I could do a commercial for this stuff. Mmmmm! Boy that Hennigans goes down smooth. And afterwards you don't even smell. That's right folks. I just had three shots of Hennigans and I don't smell. Imagine, you can walk around drunk all day. That's Hennigans, the no-smell, no tell scotch.

Burger Wars Episode XXXVII: Oliver and Perry Lang

A new place I was looking  forward to going was Barbecoa, yes Jamie Oliver and Adam Perry Lang place. Simply a two in one, a butchery and a restaurant, simple cooking techniques, state of the art kitchen including robata grills, tandoor ovens, fire pits, and even a Texan smoker. Also having the butchery bellow the restaurant let them to have the whole animal instead of a selection of cuts making a more complete and exciting menu.

Snapshot from the Menu

The View

Got to the place with a couple colleagues, one of them from Houston so that’s what I call a tricky fellow to serve BBQ. Contemplate the menu for a couple minutes then decided to go for Pork Scratchings and chipotle sauce, the pit-smoked baby back ribs with coriander and chilli, and finally the Barbecoa burger.

Scratchings

The Burger

The burger comes with Westcombe cheddar, streaky bacon, sweet onions, and chips.

Close up

The verdict, good smoky flavour, but on the other hand they killed the patty, it was cooked medium to well done, so no juices at all which is unforgivable for me. Fries were good.

The damage, 16 quid for the burger

The conclusion, the burger is not bad but seriously a BBQ place that doesn’t cook their meats to order. The ribs were superb, really nice done, the pork scratchings quite good, my colleagues’ dishes were good according to them, I don’t understand why they don’t serve the burger medium rare, that can change the whole ball game. I will give them a 7 in my scale. Not sure if coming back, maybe for the ribs.

Barbecoa reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Wink”.

Holly: Jerry, I'm thrilled you like my mutton. I was afraid you only ate salad.
Jerry: Hey, salad's got nothing on this mutton!
Elaine: Thanks for mutton!
