Burger Wars Episode XC: Smokehouse in Chiswick [BurgeReview]

You know, just because a person's a smoker, that doesn't mean he's not a human being
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Abstinence”)

I have said before that it is a bit of a challenge to find a decent bbq place in London. There are several but none hit all the marks. That was until I visited Smokehouse in Chiswick, a sister place of the original in Islington.

Just in case
I have been in two occasions already, and one of them was a feast, where they smoked, and slow cooked three types of meat, short rib, ox cheek, and Korean pulled pork. The feast was amazing, everything spot on, one of the best meals I have had.

Feast time
But now on to the burgers, they also have burgers a la carte, especially for lunch time. I went for the fried chicken burger with guacamole, chipotle, and fried egg, and my wife got the Cheese Hereford burger with a lovely melted comte.

Say cheese!
The verdict, both burgers were fantastic but if you’re a cheese aficionado you have to go with the cheesy one

The damage,  £15 for the burger with fries

The conclusion, amazing place, nice burgers, and great smoked meats, can’t recommend highly enough, top marks

Pitt Cue Reloaded

A place I really enjoyed last year was Pitt Cue Co. With all the pop up madness, food trucks, night markets, etc, Pitt Cue was one of my favourite and probably one of the only places I ate more than once as I love to try different things so always going to different place to eat. 4 weeks in their new location around Soho. The place is small and cozy, 30 seats in total, less than a dozen stools to sit upstairs, and some tables downstairs, simple decor, liked the lamps upstairs, and what is most important they make you feel like home, is like arriving to a friend’s house, Jamie will make everything to be sure you’re ok, even if that means you need pickle back shots.

The place
Got to the place for lunch, saw the menu for a couple minutes, discuss with Jamie about my reading of Michael Lewis’ Boomerang, then finally decided a to have a Pitt Cue whatever draught some scratching, the beef ribs with braised sprout tops, and a pulled pork bun.

The bar inside
The beer was nice and they go excellent with the scratching, probably not as strong as the pickle back but it was lunch so I prefer to keep it light. The ribs were amazing, the smoky flavour was spot on, they were tender, pretty good, the sprouts where nice, a salty and little bit sour taste that played well with the ribs. The pulled pork bun came with slaw, pickles, and a special sauce it was delicious, good balance with the right touch of sweetness, a hint of spicy, and great juices from the pork, a delight.

Food truck still running and now with a permanent home nearby Carnaby Street , great barbecue, nice cocktails, excellent service, chef Tom Adams and business partner front of the house Jamie Berger will keep high the London barbeque bar for sure.

Lamp attack
The first thing that comes to my mind with Pitt Cue apart from the barbecue is the pickle back shot that reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Red Dot”

Kramer: That is damn good scotch. I could do a commercial for this stuff. Mmmmm! Boy that Hennigans goes down smooth. And afterwards you don't even smell. That's right folks. I just had three shots of Hennigans and I don't smell. Imagine, you can walk around drunk all day. That's Hennigans, the no-smell, no tell scotch.

Pulled Pork street food and the Big Ben

Hiding under the Hungerford Bridge near the South Bank Centre you will find American street food at its best. From time to time I have to go to a partner’s office in Blackfriars and I used to walk from there to Waterloo station. A couple days back I just remembered a post from Hanna about a food truck in Waterloo, Pitt Cue Co, so I decided to give it a try.

Pitt Cue Co

Food Truck

Got to the car and asked for their specialty, the answer was pulled pork, if you are going to try my food only once I would recommend that. How could I resist to a Gloucester smoked over hickory slow cooked pull pork. AMAZING! The pork was tender, juicy, and definitely well seasoned. To join the pork coleslaw or beans, I went for the slaw which was quite good as well and giving a good balance to the pork. The presentation a cardboard box with the coleslaw at the bottom, the pulled pork on top, a touch of special spicy sauce, some pickles and a chargrilled bread, what can be better? I tell you what, the view, the end of the Southbank with a glimpse of London eye and Westminster.

Pulled Pork

The View

Friendly staff and a good selection of cocktails and shots complement the experience. Before leaving they gave me to try a bite of the Brisket, and it is as good as the pork. It was so good that the day after I came back, yes, I went for more, so I ordered the Brisket and this time I asked also for pickleback, two shots, one of rye whiskey and the other one pickle brine, all these with a small pot of pork crackling, just excellent.

Isn't the Cardboard Box Pretty?

Brisket time

Pickleback and Skins

I definitely will be coming back for more, again. Pitt Cue Co will be under the bridge until September 4 so hurry up and go as soon as you can, you won’t regret it.

Brisket reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Robbery”.

George: I love the mirror in that bathroom! I don't know what in the hell it is: I look terrific in that mirror. I don't know if it's the tile or the lighting. I feel like Robert Wagner.
Jerry: It's a good mirror. So, what are you getting?
George: I don't know, I can't eat, I, I can't have anything anymore. Look at this, look at this: eggs: out, coffee: out, french fries: out, BLT: out! I go to visit my grandparents, three big brisket sandwiches, I'm sitting here with a carrot! They're closing in on a hundred, I'm saying to them: "How can you eat that stuff?!" I'm so sick about losing that choose, you don't know.
Jerry: Oh, right, forget it, forget it, I'm not taking the place!
George: What?
Jerry: How can I live there?
George: Why not?
Jerry: Look at you, you're still thinking about it, I'll never feel comfortable.
George: Oh, get out a here.
Jerry: How can I ever have you over? You'll sit there moping.
George: Mope?
Jerry: You're already moping! Would you take the place?
George: No, impossible! It's your apartment.
Jerry: You found the place.
George: You won the choose.
Jerry: All right, forget it, it's over, I'm not moving.
George: Well, me neither.
Jerry: Definitely?
George: Definitely.
