Pastel de Nata in Hammersmith

How come he's getting so smart? I stopped having sex with Ben three days ago and I don't know no Portuguese?
Elaine Benes (Seinfeld episode “The Abstinence”)

Do you love Pasteis de Belem as much as I do? If the answer is yes and you live in West London then I got good news for you. There is a new Portuguese café/take away style in Hammersmith Broadway shopping centre only doing Pastel de Nata.

The place
The place is called Café de Nata, high turnaround place, with only a large counter, pasteis de belem, and coffee. The product is quite decent, not the best you will have but decent enough and convenient located to kill any withdrawal effects from lack of this amazing Portuguese sweet treat.

Pastel time

Still my favourite in town is Lisboa Patisserie, but this new café is a good second choice and much closer to my home.

Coffee Enquiry XLIV: A place in which people are busily occupied

He was running from a bee
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Glasses”)

A couple days back I went to meet with a friend in Parsons Green and he took me to an independent coffee place around the area. There are not many independent places deep in West London, but in Parsons you have The Hive. A not that small coffee Italianish place. Serving sandwiches, soups, salads, tarts, breakfast, and of course coffee.

Flat White
Coffee was ok, barista you could say pushing to get things right, not the greatest independent coffee place but at least an option in the area.

Burger Wars Episode LXXXVIII: The Five Guys Effect [BurgeReview]

What do you tip a Wood Guy?
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Robbery”)

The other day while on a shopping rush in White City we bump into Five Guys. American Invasion fast food burger joint, the place still living up to the hype, these days 12 stores, and still packed but not big queues as the ones in the opening days on Covent Garden.

Peanuts
My burger a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeño, lettuce, and tomatoes

Five Guys Burger
The verdict, a good greasy burger, great if you compare with fast food joints. This greasy spoon traditional joint flavours is definitely not my thing, Don’t get me wrong form time to time is ok, but I still prefer a more refined and upscale burger.

The damage, 8.75 quid for the bacon cheeseburger add all toppings you want.

The conclusion, I was amazed to see the Byron branch completely empty while the Five Guys was full with a healthy table turnaround. Londoners definitely are still dazzle by the five guys offer or maybe the 100+ flavours free refill soda machine. Good flavour, my main concern is the patties were overdone as they cook all of them well done, no juiciness factor, sorry for the die hard Five Guys fans but for me is not more than a 6 in my scale, I appreciate the extra fries they give you although they were a bit soggy.

Coffee Enquiry XXXVII: The Artisan

Well, what does he do? Is he an artisan, a craftsman, a labourer of some sort?
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Stakeout”)

The other location for Artisan is in Stamford Brook. Same as in Putney the place has a rustic wooden decor, light bites as soups and sandwiches, cakes, pastries, and of course coffee.

Artisan Wheel of Fortune
We got a Flat white and a macchiato, nice and strong coffee, full bodied as you would expect from Allpress beans, a right bitter kick, and nice latte art.

Flat White
Espresso machine: La Marzocco
Beans: AllPress
Score: 4/5

Macchiato
Really nice coffee as in Putney. Good to see how the two cafes are serving high quality coffees

Burger Wars Episode LXXXIV: Welcome to Miami [BurgeReview]

Why don't you get a pair of white shoes, move down to Miami Beach and get
the whole thing over with?
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Scofflaw”)

There is a new special in Byron until 9 June, the Miami Slice. We did a stop in Hammersmith to get a couple of them.

The place in Hammersmith
Miami Slice brings a 6oz patty with crispy potatoes, spicy salami, American cheese, smoked paprika ketchup, sourdough bun, chicharrones, and hot sauce on the side.

Miami Slice
The verdict, not Byron’s best special, sadly I don't think it worked at all even with the addition of crispy potatoes and the spicy salami. Also, the hot sauce on the side wasn’t hot but sweet.

The damage, 9.95 quid for the burger with the pork scratchings

The conclusion, have to say Byron was on a roll of really good specials until this one. Burger was a bit overcooked (medium instead of medium rare). A couple other issues in general in the Hammersmith restaurant. Order took long to get. We observed how the fries and onion rings were waiting for long time on the counter, as result fries were cold and chewy, the rings were also soaked in oil. In their defence only one chef/cook in the restaurant working on rush lunchtime, service was sporadic and also it seemed understaffed.

Drink Me Eat Me

It's hard to understand. Because I've been doing everything I
normally do. I've been watching my diet very carefully. I
exercise regularly. My only indulgence, I guess would be that
I eat a lot of frozen yogurt, but it's non-fat
Rudi Giuliani (Seinfeld episode “The Non-Fat Yoghurt”)

We recently got a rare sunny warm day in London so we decided to go for a stroll. Walking back home we bump into this small boutique/cafe/tea shop Drink Me Eat Me.

Who needs fancy cups
Hot day and all we could sea was the FroYo machine. As other venues price is per weight so as we were melting we got plenty. Froyo was really nice, natural was the best one, but I quite enjoyed the passion fruit one as well.

Spanish Paella at Parsons

Ok, fine. It's going to be very interesting, very interesting if they don't show up tonight. You know my mother made all this Paella
George Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Raincoats”)

The other day I went out with a friend an he recommended one local restaurant between Putney and Parsons Green. Tendido Cuatro a Spanish place from Cambio de Tercio group. The place specializes in Paellas and Tapas, the gourmet paellas are made with bomba rice imported from Calasparra from the region of Murcia.

Paella Time
We got a tortilla, the spicy chorizo, and a chorizo and quail paella. The spice chorizo was simple but tasty, the tortilla was sadly bit bland, but the paella was really nice, good seasoning, nice size, and good traditional flavours.

I try to avoid Spanish restaurants in London to be honest, but Tendido Cuatro serves nice traditional flavours, the tortilla was a miss but the paella was definitely a hit, wouldn’t mind to come back and try another of their paellas.

Gastropup in Imperial Wharf

Aw, these eggs are disgusting. This chicken should be ashamed of himself
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Little Jerry”)

We went the other day with a couple friends to The Sands End Gastropub. Their idea is bringing a bit of the countryside pub to London. Seasonal menu, rustic décor, good selection of ales, and famous scotch eggs. The place is quite popular, busy and a bit noisy, completely pack on a Tuesday night, so go early or if you want to have a bit I would suggest booking a table in advance.

Bite time
I couldn’t miss trying the scotch eggs and the sausage rolls, as every review I read they were mentioned. As starter we got a burrata with artichoke, which was nice, creamy and fresh burrata as you would expect. Then the scotch eggs and sausage roll, the eggs was nice, great flavour, a runny yolk, lovely. The roll was ok, nice seasoning, the pastry wasn’t crispy enough, and the roll was cold, I would love it to be hot, but for that you might need to get earlier.

Nice food, good beers, ideal if you’re a local of the area.

American BBQ Smokehouse in London

The other day I went to a Chelsea’s match and decided to eat after the game. I have to tell you it’s not an easy task to find a decent place open that late in Fulham Broadway. I ended in Bodean’s, original American BBQ smokehouse. All meats slow cook to enhance flavours and keep their juices, with 4 branches in London to try the Kansas City BBQ style.

Stamford Bridge
BBQ Time
The place is a bit small and cosy, some booths, red light ambience, full of American memorabilia, and ESPN with American sports on the monitors. After a couple minutes and a beer in hand I went for the game day special 15 quid for their buffalo wings, a full rack of baby back ribs, chips, coleslaw, and a beer.

Smokehouse
Game day special
The wings had a nice flavour but were completely overcooked. The ribs were outstanding. Great flavour, nice seasoning, traditional American BBQ. I ate the full rack with a big smile on my face.

Ribs and Wings
Barbecue reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Millennium”

Jerry: Hi. Sorry I'm late. There're a lot of chairs and balloons in my apartment. How about I make it up to you with dinner?
Valerie: Someplace nice this time?
Jerry: Yeah, I'm sorry about that Mongolian barbecue last night. I'd heard good things
Valerie: I don't know, got a two in Zagat's
Jerry: Let me just check my messages. Maybe a nicer girl called
Voice (O.C.): Hello?
Jerry: Hello? Who's this?
Voice (O.C.): Jane. What number did you dial?
Jerry: Seven?

Burger Wars Episode XLIX: A Kimchi or Irish Cult [Street Food]

I’ve been tracking Kimchi Cult for a while, and finally I was able to get Danny and Sarah thanks to Eat St. The place the re-launch of The Imperial Arms pub with a residency of a top selection of street food traders, now West Londoners have every Friday and Saturday a rotation of their favourite vendors in the pub garden.

Kimchi Cult
The pub is a gem, more like an art gallery, full of contemporary photography from Bob Carlos Clarke, great decoration, nice atmosphere, and a decent garden.

Pub
Decor
Re Launch
Danny and Sarah spent a couple years in Korea where they felt in love with the food and moved from reporting/reviewing as a food blogger (Street Foodie) to street food vendor (Kimchi Cult), and now they are offering their Korean repertoire to London’s street food movement.

The stall in the garden
Several burgers in their menu that day, at the end I went for the Kimchi Cult special, bacon, cheese, and of course kimchi.

Menu
Kimchi
Cooking
Burger time
The verdict, burger was lovely, the kimchi flavour with the bacon works pretty nice, bun toasted on the grill, the cheese wasn’t present didn’t add any to the mix, probably the strong flavour of the kimchi took over and didn’t give space to the cheese.

The damage, 6.5 quid for the burger, no fries.

The conclusion, great flavour, as Danny mentioned the trick is in the beef, good quality leads to nice flavours, the kimchi was spot on, this Korean/Irish burger has a 7 in my scale.

Kimchi love
Korea reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Fatigues”

Kramer: Common Frank, I need you. I mean the war was fifty years ago
Frank: In my mind, there's a war still going on
Kramer: Alright, what happened, Frank? What is it that you can't get over?
Frank: Inchon, Korea, 1950. I was the best cook Uncle Sam ever saw, slinging hash for the Fighting 103rd. As we marched north, our supply lines were getting thin. One day a couple of GIs found a crate, inside were six hundred pounds of prime Texas steer. At least it once was prime. The use date was three weeks past, but I was arrogant, I was brash, I thought if I used just the right spices, cooked it long enough
Kramer: What happened?
Frank: I went too far. I over seasoned it. Men were keeling over all around me. I can still hear the retching, the screaming. I sent sixteen of my own men to the latrines that night. They were just boys
Kramer: Frank, you were a boy too, and it was war, it was a crazy time for everyone
Frank: Tell that to Bobby Colby. All that kid wanted to do was go home. Well he went home alright, with a crater in his colon the size of a cutlet. Had to sit him on a cork the eighteen-hour flight home
Kramer: Frank, now listen to me. Two hundred Jewish singles need you. This is your chance to make it all right again
Frank: No, no, I'll never cook again! Never! Now get out of my house!! Get out, go
