A Favela in London

Favela Chic is a place I used to go a lot during my post graduate studies in City of London. A bar that takes you immediately to South America with a decor that includes paintings and figures of saints and catholic symbols all over the place. They describe themselves as a bar, restaurant, club, bordello, or none of the above which probably they are, but a good place for Saturday nights to crash if you’re in a party mode in Shoreditch.

Saint Decor

My friends Christine and Sasha decided to celebrate moving flat in the place having dinner and staying for a little bit of funk and Brazilian music. Kind of weird I’ve heard of housewarmings but not leaving parties.

Sasha ready to attack the Feijoada

Got to the place and order to share some Pao de Queijo the traditional cheese bread for breakfast in Brazil and other South American countries, then for main I got a roasted leg of duck. The cheese bread was excellent, exactly the same flavour as I remember when living in the new continent. The duck leg was simply terrible, I was really disappointed with my main. On the other hand my friend Sasha asked for the Feijoada which was quite good and was pretty traditional. The Feijoada is black beans with pork, bacon, smoked sausage, and salt beef served with rice.

Perna de Pato

I wouldn’t recommend the food, maybe if you want to try a little bite of Brazilian cuisine, but probably there are better places in London, on the other hand the party is quite good, and they have good selection cocktails including mojitos and caipirinhas.

Party Time

Brazil reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Old Man” where Kramer tries to sell an old records of Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes.

Ron: I'll give you five bucks.
Kramer: Five bucks?
Newman: Well, you know how much those records are worth?
Ron: Yeah, I do, five dollars.
Newman: Those records are worth more than five dollars!
Kramer: He's gypping us...
Newman: You're gypping us!
Ron: Well, what do you got here, you know, you got "Don Ho: Live At Honolulu", you got "Jerry Vale Sings Italian Love Songs" you got Sergio Mendes, now come on...
Kramer: Wait, wait, wait... Sergio Mendes has a cult following.
Newman: They follow him like a cult.
Kramer: He can't even walk down the street in South America...
Ron: Look, that's his problem, alright? Now you don't like it, too bad.
Kramer: I don't like it...
Newman: I don't like it.
Ron: Well, then get the Hell out of my store, alright? You bring me something decent, I'll give you some money.
Kramer: Alright, will be back, Jack.
Newman: Alright, will be back... Jack!
