A Wiener Beisl & Markt [On The Road: Vienna]

Yes you do, Biff. You've never been to a Flea Market, and you think they have fleas there
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Pez Dispenser”)

While on holidays in Vienna I bump into a really nice producer market in the Innere Stadt. The Freyung Markt, small but diverse bio market. The highlights a cheese and charcuterie stall from Thum’s Schinken Manufactur, and a really nice organic beer stall. We got a beautiful scamorza, a stretched curd cheese, subtle smoked flavour similar to the mozzarella, and some mangalitsa, just superb.

My last stop was to visit Griechenbeisl the oldest beisl in the inner city to get traditional cuisine in this lovely inn. Goulash is the way to go. Marisol got a suckling pig leg that was amazing. All the food was lovely, great flavours and authentic execution. An old lady playing a Zither, really old string instrument, it felt like being in the Tudors and King Henry VIII calling out loud "let's celebrate".

We ended with an apple strudel, lovely flavour, and traditional execution. Rustic dishes big portions, really nice authentic Austrian cuisine. don't miss the Mark Twain Zimmer, probably the best room of the beisl, where celebrities, authors, politicians, and artists have signed the walls including Mark Twain, Johnny Cash, Ludwig V. Beethoven, and W.A. Mozart.

Wurst Madness in Wien [On The Road: Vienna]

Blood over there, sausages over here, I'm living in a slaughter house
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Blood”)

Similar to Berlin and Copenhagen the Würstelstand (traditional Austrian sausage street food stand) are everywhere in Vienna. In every corner there is a hot dong cart. So I took the task of visiting a couple ones taking recommendations from Anthony Bourdain, Lonely Planet, and the city Tourist Information.

The One in the Brewery

This is not a stand but a restaurant. The place 1516 Brewing Company, a mix between a microbrewery and a pub. We ended there the first day, as I wanted to get the burger plus was extremely hungry and I was completely disoriented. Big mistake, the cheddar burger with BBQ sauce and aioli didn’t get top marks.

Marisol ordered the Currywurst, traditional Berlin style, similar to the one I got there, but the sausage was not cut into small pieces. The sausage didn’t impress either to be honest. If you go to the place do it for the beer.

The One near the hotel

Or second experience was in a street stand. We failed to have dinner at 9:30pm as the kitchen of the place we went was closed at that time, so we returned to the hotel and spotted the hot dog cart and proceed to investigate.

Schnellimbis
The place Schnellimbis in Rennweg with Ungargasse. This was our first Käsekrainer or the cheese sausage. Convenient location for us, it solved our situation but far from the greatest one.

The One in Naschmarkt

We spotted the place Heisse und Kalte Wurstwaren while wandering around the market. The place is hiding turning from Urbanek. The owner Paul is ready to help, all kinds of sausages, we went for another Käsekrainer and the spicy Klobasse or Burenwurst.

These sausages were much better, great flavour, really nice. The Burenwurst has a bit of bacon in the mix, and you know everything tastes better with bacon.

The One in Albertina

As I mentioned they are everywhere, the one in Albertinaplatz is Bitzinger, perfect location between Café Mozart, the Staatsoper, and Albertina. Therefore before having a torte in Mozart we cross the street and got the smoky sausage or Waldviertler.

Bitzinger
Really nice, good flavour, you will easily recognise it as has a dark skin. The place is quite popular with punters going to the opera.

The One in the Middle of the Street

This is the famous one, where Anthony Bourdain went at the end of his No Reservation episode. Würstelstand am Hohen Markt is on a traffic island in the middle of the Innere Stadt.

We got the garlic one here or Debreziner, the sausage is seasoned with garlic and paprika. Really nice one, great flavour, perfect for a snack while sightseeing and wandering around the old city.

The One in Prater

Just at the entrance of Prater you can have a wurst while riding the Wiener Riesenrad. The place is another Bitzinger. By that time we tried most of the sausages so we went back to basics and got the Käsekrainer.

The One in the Rathaus

During our visit it was the Music Film Festival, so the Rathaus was taken hostage by a huge screen and plenty food and drink stalls. We visited the fair in a couple occasions, nice beer, all kind of food, and we couldn’t resist trying the würst stand Wiener Rathauskeller and some beers from Ottakringer

We got again the Käsekrainer, really nice, they serve the sausage without cutting it into pieces, the employee got a bit annoyed when I asked him to cut it. But after a bit of rambling in German he proceeded to do it. The beers were really nice, good selection. Good flavour, lovely beers, and fun time in a great festival.

Wien Schnitzel Time [On The Road: Vienna]

Tell that to Bobby Colby. All that kid wanted to do was go home. Well he went home all right, with a crater in his colon the size of a cutlet. Had to sit him on a cork the eighteen-hour flight home!
Frank Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Fatigues”)

One thing I was looking forward to eat in Vienna was to eat schnitzels. A couple days before my trip I saw in Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservation episode how he ended eating a cordon blue schnitzel in Naschmarkt. You have no idea how many nights I dreamed about having this thin tender meat slightly hammered, coated with flour, breadcrumbs, and fried.

The one in Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt is apparently the most popular market in Vienna, a central aisle in a two way street full of food, produce, and other stuff. The market dates from the 16th century and it’s one of the city attractions.

Produce at the market
I got to the place thanks to Bourdain, in his episode he went to this amazing stall called Urbanek and then to a butchery nearby and got a humongous schnitzel. But for me all went south as Urbanek was closed on holidays, and the stall that made the cordon blue was no more open for business. We decided to give it a try in another stall, S’Wiener Naschmarkt Beisl, nothing to do with their sign saying it was the best schnitzel in town, but what was our surprised when we found out that our waitress Elizabeth was Venezuelan, and also she was the one that cooked the schnitzel in the No Reservation episode. She basically told us when she hear me complaining about Urbanek holidays and not being able to find the other place.

Urbanek
Elizabeth mentioned how tourists still recognise her from the couple seconds she is on the screen in the episode, and then went to explain the differences between the cordon blue she used to make and the one we were going to have. Basically the other one was more expensive as they used a better cheese and ham, and also it was bigger.

At our table
The veal cordon blue was ok, good flavour, decent size, to e honest nothing memorable apart from Elizabeth friendly service, it helps to be Venezuelan, but she went the extra mile, giving us even recommendations on trips outside the city.

The one really famous

Figlmuller queues reminded me the ones in London to have Shake Shack and Five Guys these days. We went three times, and the last one during lunch was the only one we were luck to find a table. One thing though, they have a bigger place around the corner from the original place in Bäckerstraße, but we didn’t notice until the last day and we decided to go to the original in Wollzeile.

Figlmuller
Wollzeile
The place is an institution in Vienna, home of the schnitzel for more than 100 years. Fourth generations of Figmullers keeping the tradition that started in 1905. A wine tavern to celebrate the Viennese way of life, and a menu making tribute to the traditional schnitzel.

The place
Our view
The way to describe it is humongous. The schnitzel measures 30 centimetres. They made it from pork, and it’s beautiful. Tastes great, well executed, it’s tender, and the coating is golden crispy. Definitely worth the wait, just remember no beers in the place only wine from Figlmuller’s vineyards.

The one by luck

In one of the occasions when we avoided the suicidal queues of Figlmuller, I went to the Lonely Planet guide and decided to give it a try to a local Beisl nearby. The place Beim Czaak, opened in 1926, fourth generation of Czaak family, offering traditional Viennese cuisine.

The place
Candlelit terrace
We got our table in the terrace just in front of the place, a fence closed square with tables and covered by a huge umbrella. Their cordon blue is on pork again, deep-fried filled with ham, cheese, onions, and mushrooms. What you could call the Calzone of Austrian. It was amazing, the filling was top notch, great flavours, perfect execution, lovely place in the Innere Stadt. I'm just going to say it's a must to go there.
