The Oldest Beer Garden in Berlin

If you read this blog frequently you should know that before travelling I usually check if there is an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations. For the one around Berlin there were two places I was really looking forward to visiting, one strictly food related, the other one food and let’s say BEER!

Pratergarten

Pratergarten is the oldest and biggest beer garden in Berlin, it was open in 1837. It has a restaurant offering traditional German food and a massive beer garden, where you can have different kind of beers from pils to weissbier, and also snacks covering pretzels, sausages, potato salad, and even a soup of the day.

First Pils

I got a couple beers relaxed surrounded by the trees, got the house beer (Prater Pils), then a wheat beer (Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbeer), and finally ended with a dark lager (Prater Schwarzbier) and then decided to get some German treat, well actually an Austrian treat as I got a Vienna Schnitzel. Excellent veal escalope, and the portion was huge, it would have filled at least two. I joined that with a Jever Pils a beer brewed with extra hops.

Weiss

Schnitzel

An excellent option if you are in Berlin to have a taste of beer garden experience with all the trimmings.

Prater

Beer reminds the Seinfeld episode “The Bizarro Jerry” when Jerry is dating a girl with man hands.

Gillian: Would you like some bread, Jerry?
Jerry: No. No thanks, I'm, just not hungry.
Gillian: Well, then at least drink your beer.
Jerry: Oh. Twist off.
Gillian: You have a little something on your face.
Jerry: I can get it.
Gillian: Eh, no-no, No-no.. You're missing it, it's higher.
Gillian: It's an eyelash. Make a wish.
Jerry: I don't want to.
Gillian: Make a wish.
Jerry: Okay.
