A Wiener Beisl & Markt [On The Road: Vienna]

Yes you do, Biff. You've never been to a Flea Market, and you think they have fleas there
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Pez Dispenser”)

While on holidays in Vienna I bump into a really nice producer market in the Innere Stadt. The Freyung Markt, small but diverse bio market. The highlights a cheese and charcuterie stall from Thum’s Schinken Manufactur, and a really nice organic beer stall. We got a beautiful scamorza, a stretched curd cheese, subtle smoked flavour similar to the mozzarella, and some mangalitsa, just superb.

My last stop was to visit Griechenbeisl the oldest beisl in the inner city to get traditional cuisine in this lovely inn. Goulash is the way to go. Marisol got a suckling pig leg that was amazing. All the food was lovely, great flavours and authentic execution. An old lady playing a Zither, really old string instrument, it felt like being in the Tudors and King Henry VIII calling out loud "let's celebrate".

We ended with an apple strudel, lovely flavour, and traditional execution. Rustic dishes big portions, really nice authentic Austrian cuisine. don't miss the Mark Twain Zimmer, probably the best room of the beisl, where celebrities, authors, politicians, and artists have signed the walls including Mark Twain, Johnny Cash, Ludwig V. Beethoven, and W.A. Mozart.
