Monty’s Reloaded

Well, because the meats are divided into a class system. You got Pastrami and Corned Beef in one class and Salami and Bologna in another. That's not right
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Race”)

I came back to Ropewalk market in Maltby St, and looking for Monty’s Deli I pass by and thought they weren’t trading that weekend. What was my surprise when I saw they took one of the locals. Similar to the other warehouses, some sort of antique store, old furniture or should I say vintage? The popular Jewish food vendor is trading in a new house.

The new place
Reflexions
In Action
Busy as usual, not as usual probably a mix of the new place with the rain, and the bank holiday weekend. I got to the counter and yes I was able to get my Reuben special.

Reuben Special
The Reuben special is a monster sandwich with Pastrami and salt beef on top. Amazing, double the size, double the flavour, all the flavours of the traditional Reuben with the salt beef addition just the kind of sandwich I like to eat.

Jewish delight
Definitely one of my favourite sandwiches in London. Still only on Saturdays, my recommendation is go early so you can go special, go big, go tasty.

Coffee Enquiry XVIII: Craft Coffee + Late Morning in Maltby St Market

Elaine, the guy's Jewish two days, he's already making Jewish jokes
Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld episode “The Yada Yada")

You have to go to Ropewalk. That was a sentence a couple friends of mine have been telling me. The Maltby St market is open only on Saturday from 9am to 4pm. A good selection of vendors with a couple highlights I wanted to try, and some one off pop up style vendors and events. Even at some point Jose Pizzarro had one stall there.

The market
I went for two reasons, the first one to finally try Kimchinary’s tacos and to see what all my friends have been telling me so far.

Let me start with the coffee. A small trader just by the entrance of the Ropewalk arch is Craft Coffee. Single origin coffee, they change it every week to keep the customers surprised. Beans supply by Has Been. The coffee is served three ways, espresso based extraction, filter, and if by luck is sunny enough you will be able to get a cold brew.

Coffee Time
The drinks
Sadly Craft Coffee is only on Saturday’s in the market, so you have only about 5 hours window to get there and try an amazing flat white or a lovely macchiato. All the trimmings including nice latte art either by Jamie or Emily.

Macchiato
Espresso Machine: Nuova Simonelli
Beans: Has Bean
Score: 5/5

Great coffee I would love to see around more of Craft Coffee in London.

Now back to the food part. I browsed around and two things caught my attention, the obvious one Hanna’s stall Kimchinary and the second one the biggest queue of the market Jewish soul food by Monty’s Deli.

Kimchinary's stall
Monty's
Kimchinary is Hanna’s project. Former blogger, JƤmtlad native, foodie, and Kimchi lover. The proposal are some amazing kimchi/Korean tacos, and some sort of kimchi arancini (kimchi fried rice or Kimchini).

Kimchini
I got to the stall, never revealed who I was, had a lovely chat with Hannah while waiting for my pork belly tacos. I have to say they are amazing. Good balance, every single component well presented, as it is fine dinning, and the flavour spot on. Who would have said that Korea meat Mexico works! Superb, if you want to try her food just check her twitter (kimchinary) to track Hanna down.

The great Korean Tacos
My last treat of the day was Monty’s Deli. Mark gives us Jewish food prepared from scratch, chicken soup with matzo balls, and either or both Pastrami and Salt Beef hand sliced sandwiches. The beef brisket is brined for 6 days in a secret recipe, then a blend of spices and seven hours in an outdoor coal smoker seal the deal.

Monty's menu
Pastrami craving in action
I got the Reuben, no special as they ran out Salt Beef when it was my turn. In case you don’t know the special is adding Salt Beef to the Pastrami making a monster sandwich. The size of the normal Reuben is big, plenty of extremely flavourful pastrami, really good. Just my kind of sandwich.

Reuben time
The sandwich is heavy loaded New York style for sure so you have the flavour and the size. Similar to Craft Coffee it would be good to see Monty’s Deli around more. Only Saturday folks hope this limited appearances aren't becoming a trend.

A Modest Sandwich Guide in CBD [On The Road: Brisbane]

"Well, I'm sitting over there waiting for you to finish your sandwich for twenty minutes. Now you're drinking coffee, that's going to be another ten minutes"
Jerry (Seinfeld Episode “The Ticket”)

It took me a while to write this post but here you go in the next couple lines I will share my Sandwich experiences during my stay in Brisbane. I loved the simplicity of the sandwich, and when well executed can be much more than two slices of bread and a filling. So while in Brisbane I did a little bit of research and went to try a good sample of the city’s options

The Steak one

My first sandwich was in Malt, a luxury three levels wine bar and the fame of the best steak sandwich in town. The sandwich in question a Hereford eye filet with Gruyere cheese, tomato, Malt sauce on a Levain.

The place
Malt
The Malt Steak Sandwich
Excellent and well deserved the fame. Caramelised onions gave a nice touch, the sauce is outstanding, the meat was tender, the cheese completely melted, and the bread toasted with a buttery colour, great option in CBD.

The Reuben one

I couldn’t leave Brisbane without trying Spring’s Reuben. I visited the restaurant many times now I have to highlight that the kitchen is under Chef Emlyn Thorrington. The sandwich a classic Reuben, pastrami, Gruyere, sauerkraut, and dill pickles.

The place
Reuben
The sandwich was nice, nice ciabatta style bread, nicely toasted, good flavours, the sauce well made, my only issue I wanted more pastrami and the cheese wasn’t melted properly.

The Cowman one

Another popular place was Pourboy Espresso. The place is a small and simple cafĆ© in CBD offering good coffee, some salads, sandwiches, and another light dishes. Good concept with the combination of a Chef and a Barista running their own place. The sandwich another steak option, free range rump, caramelised onions, Fontina cheese, and aioli.

Pourboy
The Cowman
The cowman was superb, great sandwich, the steak was perfectly cooked and tender, every component was in balance, and the bread was crispy toasted but still puffy and soft. I got a macchiato and it was great, good espresso blend from Mecca, latte art, and brewed in a Synesso machine.

The Cubano one

My next visit was to Super Whatnot. The place is hiding in Burnett Lane, a small and cozy bar, simple menu based on tacos, salads, and sandwiches. Completely empty during lunchtime probably not so much for drinks after work. The sandwich the Miami Medianoche Cubano with slow roast pork, jamon Serrano, Swiss cheese, and pickles.

That’s what we call a Pernil Sandwich. Really nice, good flavours, some sweet notes from grapes on the pickles. The bread is crispy but not toasted. I join the sandwich with some crispy Argentinean spiced pork cracklings probably the best ones I have had.

The Duck one

My last visit was to Sage on Ann. A fast pace cafƩ perfect to have a quick lunch and come back to work. Simple, you order at the counter and look for a table, plenty of small tables all over, and a not so nice view to the road. You will find a simple and not complicated lunch menu. The sandwich Pecking duck with chilli plum, shallots, cos and mayo in a Turkish bread.

Sage
Pecking Duck Sandwich
Amazing sandwich, the Asian flavours, the puffy toasted Turkish bread was brilliant. The combination of sweet plum sauce and the duck was simply a great marriage. They throw some leaks in the mix that played perfect.

Toastie Meltdown in London

A couple days back I finally had the chance to go to one of Young & Foodish events. This time the Toastie Meltdown, four competitors one prize The Iron Toastie Award, but the real winners were all the people that enjoyed a great event with nice beers from Camden Town Brewery, and excellent toasties from the competitors.

Toastie Meltdown
The Participants
My first toastie of the night was Pump Street Bakery. The Tuffled Cheese Toastie, a day old sourdough with Fontina cheese, truffles, mushrooms, and hazelnuts. The winner of the night, great flavours, the cheese perfectly melted, a crunchy texture thanks to the hazelnuts, and their star the sourdough loaf.

The Winner Truffled Cheese Sandwich under bad light
Second one I had the unusual suspect and established Borough Market vendor Kappacasein. Bill Oglethorpe didn’t do any tweaks to his winning formula the Toasted Cheese Sandwich. Pollaine bread, 18 months aged Montgomery cheddar, onions, leaks, and garlic. Excellent flavour, the traditional recipe, my only complain the portion was extremely small, come on Bill you could have been a bit more generous.

Borough Market's Kappacasein
The lovely but not so generous Toasted Cheese
Third toastie of the night was the Mishkin’s Reuben Melt. A seeded cream bun to create a nine layered toastie. It was the generous portion of the night, as the Mishkin’s team gave a whole sandwich to each punter, but still not NYC Katz's style where you get a tower of pastrami. Great flavour, definitely one of my favourites, the only downside I can think of was that the cheese wasn’t completely melted, they should kept it a couple more minutes. Sorry guys I would have voted for you if not for the cheese breakdown.

Final toastie of the night Fred Smith’s Patty Melt. Yes the London lord of the burgers created a toastie burger. Smashed beef patty, with melted Parmesan, and onions, al these in a caraway seeded loaf. My favourite of the night and as consequence my final vote. Great flavours, patty was perfectly cooked, juicy, the parmesan with the onions was amazing, and on top you had a chipotle sauce to dip your and double dip your toastie in it.

For dessert Illy’s barista Marco Arrigo gave us a bicerin. Hot chocolate, espresso, and cream. It was beautiful, nice coffee, great chocolate, and the touch of the chestnut cream was spot on.

Just a final note regarding the venue, The Camden Town Brewery has a nice and cozy bar basically below the overground rails. Good selection of beers I had a Hell’s Lager and then went for the Flight. Five caƱa size beers to choose. I went for a quite nice American style Pale Ale, a too light for me Hoppy nitro Stout called Ink, a fruity 7 Hop Lager, a nice Belgian Wit with roasted lemon and bergamot called Gentlerman’s Wit, and finally a light Kellerbier Pilsner called Unfiltered Hells.

Beer Time
Need a Keg?
Flight
Great night, great toasties, great beers.

The dipping with the Patty Melt reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Implant”

Timmy: What are you doing?
George: What?
Timmy: Did you just double-dip that chip?
George: Excuse me?
Timmy: You double-dipped the chip!
George: Double-dipped? What are you talking about?
Timmy: You dipped the chip. You took a bite. And you dipped again
George: So?
Timmy: That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip! From now on, when you take a chip, just take one dip and end it!
George: Well, I'm sorry, Timmy but I don't dip that way
Timmy: Oh, you don't, huh?
George: No. You dip the way you want to dip. I'll dip the way I want to dip
Timmy: Give me the chip! Give me the chip!
