Bits and Pieces in Brisvegas [On The Road:Brisbane]

You know those people, you know they're mentally disturbed. They should be sent to Australia
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Good Samaritan”)

My backlog of post is continuously increasing, and sincerely I see no way to catch up with some of the post properly. As a result, I decided to give you at least a quick highlight of some of my favourite and not so favourite experience in Brisbane.

The Spanish Posh Place

Ortiga it’s a nice relax place, quite atmosphere, looks anything but Spanish. However, the menu is quite regional. Two levels, tapas on the top one, and full dining on the bottom one. Owner Simon Hill bet has giving him three chef hats by the Australian Good Food Guide.

Spanish cured cuts
The highlights, the San Simon cheese from Galicia, a creamy cow milk slightly smoked, delicious. Also the Valdeon blue was superb, a cow milk spicy cheese, wrapped in sycamore leaves from Castilla y Leon. The Iberico is quite good, even I usually don’t like to eat Jamon outside Spain as disappointments are a common denominator. The chargrilled marinated chicken wings were awesome, I loved them, the marinated was extremely good sadly not too Spanish. You can also try La guilda, it was the first pintxo ever, an olive, anchovy, and pickled chilli. Quite strong flavours, good acidity, the olive flavour really nice with the salty anchovy. I would avoid the potatoes as the sauces were terrible. We ended having Armagnac excellent strong aromas while you drinking.

The Italian One

Tartufo is a modern Italian place from chef Tony Percuoco. The place was packed so I sat by the bar which was some sort of American diner style boots and tables but with a European twist, probably similar to a French Brassiere style. Dark oak with crimson red boots, dim lights (terrible for food bloggers), noisy place, Buena Vista Social Club as musical ambience. Two hats from Australian Good Food Guide.

Tartufo's bar
I started with Calzoni fritti, so some sort of Panzerotti, small fried handmade calzone filled with ricotta, salami, provola mozzarella, and white pepper, topped with basil tomato and Parmesan. Amazing flavour that's what we call a Pastelito back in Venezuela. I think it needed a bit more in the fryer as the dough was underdone/tough, but the flavour was great the cheese with ricotta the basil and tomato punch really nice, good balance of flavours, wouldn’t mind a bit more of the salami. My main a cotoletta alla valdostana. Veal rack filled with fontina cheese, sage, and prosciutto, coated in almond and breadcrumbs. Amazing the flavour was great, perfectly cooked, the melted cheese superb. As a side a rocket salad, simple but perfect. I can eat in places like Tartufo every day.

The Other Spanish Place

Moda is another Mediterranean restaurant. One chef hat by AGFG. Al fresco sitting, nice and quiet atmosphere. The menu under chef Javier Codina based on rustic cuisine. It only had a couple tables when my visit for diner.

Moda
The place
I got a Manolete chorizo sausage with pimientos. Great flavour, a spicy notch, and the beautiful pimientos cooked on the grilled with a smoky flavour, sea salt, and olive oil drizzle. Great dish.

Chorizo and pimientos
The zucchini flowers with goat cheese, and sweet corn salsa, oh my god! It's a volcano of flavours, I love it. The corn salsa is great, tomato, red onions, watercress, corn, just beautiful, and when you cut the flower the creamy goat cheese explosion in perfect balance of acidity and sweetness punch. Superb dish.

Zucchini flower
Finally, Angel hair pasta with scallops, calamari, prawn, and aioli. This is the rustic cuisine that characterise the place. A heavy dish, dense, well-seasoned, the aioli makes it lighter, seafood was cooked perfectly, great flavour and excellent to share.

The Greek Transatlantic

George's Paragon serves Mediterranean cuisine in a traditional style. White and blue atmosphere with an outstanding view of the river and story bridge. No chef hats for the place. Seafood oriented menu.

The place
The view
The attraction is the Seafood platter. A huge platter full with king prawns, BBQ bugs, smoked salmon, mixed oysters, BBQ prawns, garlic prawns, battered prawns, fish, calamari, lobster, also add rice, fries, and fruits. It was humongous. Seafood nicely cooked, the lobster was superb, the oyster with bacon was to die for, closely followed by the garlic prawns.

The Modern Australian

Tank is a Modern Australian cuisine awarded with one chef hat by AGFG. Intimate space inside, while outside a laneway bar with U shape tables. The menu is a combination of mod oz cuisine with Italian.

The place
Special
I got a burger but that's in another post what I want to talk here is about the 7 spices calamari, it was the highlight, beautiful, perfectly cooked, great seasoning, and an amazing homemade mayo. Really nice, I will come back only for that calamari.

The Hotel Steakhouse

Vintaged a modern and luxurious restaurant located at the lobby of the Hilton. Minimalistic style, relax, not too busy. Classic steakhouse menu, no hats for Vintaged.

Vintaged
I got another burger here but my starter was a pork belly with black pudding. It was amazing, the flavour of the belly with the saltiness and punch of the black pudding. Just great, nice combination, great balance, perfectly accomplished.

The French Bistro

Montrachet is a lovely and classic French cuisine under the command of Chef Thierry Galichet. The place is like getting into a bistro in Paris. French décor, small tables in single line, and a big marble bar for more sporadic clientele. Well lit the white brick wall gave intensity and atmosphere. Menu changes every couple months.

Montrachet
I have to say (Spoiler alert) I loved the place and went in many occasions. Everything I had was amazing. Jamon tostade, a prosciutto with tomato, and a boiled quail egg over toasted bread. Really nice. The classic steak tartare, they presented the ingredients before prepare it, so you're sure is made from scratch. Beautifully executed classic. If they have Bouillabaisse in the menu it’s a must. The broth is intense, seafood perfectly cooked, the garlic toasted bread and aioli everything worked together. The Roquefort brulee is lovely, great idea. Other amazing dishes are the scallops, out of this world, perfectly cooked, a delicate filo pastry and hollandaise combination, perfect. Finally, the sand crab soufflé, quite lovely, nice seafood sauce, perfectly done, puffy, nice flavour.

As a plus the service was great, probably the best I found in Brisbane and the food is simply excellent.

Brisburger Quest [On The Road/BurgeReview: Brisbane]

I never guessed that finding a decent burger joint in Brisbane was going to be a difficult task. Completely different situation than the one in Melbourne where the options were plenty, with Wagyu burgers in every corner, and a couple Burger Bloggers to steer your hunt for the perfect patty. So without any help I started my quest for the golden patty.

The first joint I visited. How to describe it? Probably young, hippie, and alternative place in Southbank area. Loud indie rock through the speakers trembling the outdoor tables and their al fresco offer.
Beastie Burgers
Burgers are made from scratch from rump. 14 Burgers, some salads, chips and onion rings as a side. My selection American in Noosa, flame grilled beef burger, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato relish, and Kenilworth cheddar.

American in Noosa
Nice flavour, good balance with all the components, sadly it was overcooked, they offered medium and was pretty much well done, as result no juices, no messiness. Chips were nice and rustic, a bit crispier would have been perfect, a touch of balsamic and aioli was quite nice.

My second stop was the same dark bar with cool atmosphere I mentioned in a previous post. This time I wasn’t there for quick bites but to try their burger.

The Laneway
The burger a Wagyu chuck patty with lettuce, tomato, cheese, caramelised onions, beetroot relish, and bacon. I tried to order it medium rare but it was not possible, the excuse was that the chef is unable to cooked the burgers to different specifications, seriously?

Wagyu Burger
Nice meat flavour, obviously no juices, a dried patty. The beetroot relish not my thing,  not so keen with that sweetish flavour. Overall an ok burger.

Third stop and no luck yet. Another steakhouse in Portside Brisbane. The attraction of the place a 270 Plumm Champagne glasses chandelier. The burger is in the Bar Menu but the chef made an exception and I got mine on the main dinning room.

Belvedere Bar & Grill
The kitchen
The Belvedere Burger, Gruyere cheese, bacon, and tomato relish, served with shoestring fries. Nice flavour, good balance, a lovely rustic toasted bun, sadly the bun got a bit tough at the end. The Wagyu patty perfectly cooked, great flavour, a bit smaller for the size of the bun, so at the end I finished eating a bacon and cheese sandwich. Shoestring fries were a bit tough.

Grill’d

Yes the chain that hates bloggers. Well guess what Grill’d I went and I’m writing about it. They are all over Australia, I remember them from Melbourne but the burger scene there was so good that it didn’t cross my mind eating there. The place is an assembly line well oiled machine. You can see how they prepare everything in the counter, one in charge of the bun, another two of the toppings and sauces, one of the fries, and of course the grill man.

No Blogging? Ha!
Assembly line
My burger had crispy bacon and cheese with salad, relish, and herbs mayo. The burger wasn’t as bad as I thought. It was nice for a fast food kind of place, cooked medium, no juices, but good flavour. Fries were good, sauces made in house with fresh ingredients. Honestly a good quick option, at least in Brisbane.

Moving on my next victim was back to Spring. Chef Kym Machin bistro place, at least by the time I went it was. Still one hat from the Good Food Guide. The same white and bright décor. Seasoned menus made from Australian produce, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Spring
The one and only Wagyu beef burger with shoestring fries. Burger was ok, to be honest I had better meals at Spring. A bit smallish in size, thin patty, and as a result it was cooked medium instead of medium rare as I ordered. Sadly didn’t blow my mind.

Again the same steakhouse I reviewed previously. Favourite place for one of my colleagues, usually pretty consistent delivery in terms of steaks. Lovely cow cartoons as a decor.

Kingsley's
The burger a Wagyu version, Cheddar cheeseburger with bacon, iceberg, and a BBQ sauce. Cooked well done, no juices, BBQ sauce gave a sweet touch, the iceberg gave a crunchy touch. The bacon was British style, meaty, bun toasted, for a moment I thought it was going to collapse but it held. Overall ok, I was expecting more for a Wagyu version.

Another laneway bar, basically they took over the building hallway put U shape tables and voila a bar semi-al fresco was created. Restaurant with one hat awarded by the AGFG. The restaurant was pretty busy but the bar was completely empty for a Thursday night.

Tank
The burger with miso mustard, the bun rustic, puffy, quite nice, thin patty cooked medium, a bit pink but no juices at all, the mustard gave a nice bitterness, on top thinly sliced pickles. The fries were outstanding, the burger was ok.

The modern and luxurious Hilton hotel restaurant, minimalistic style, relax, not too busy. Premium steakhouse and wine bar, they had a chef hat during my visit but couldn’t retain it in 2013.

Vintaged
Back to the burger, the Vintaged Wagyu burger, it comes with beetroot but I asked to be removed. Basically I unbalanced the chef creation, but in my opinion burgers and beetroots should not to be mixed. Caramelised onions, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and BBQ sauce. Nice flavour, cooked medium, but still a slightly amount of juices dripping, Too much sweetness from the onions and BBQ sauce, I can’t imagine with the beetroot.

Ortiga

Simon Hill tapas bar and restaurant. A cool lounge and dinning Mediterranean cuisine place in Fortitude Valley. Chef Pablo Tordesillas after being trained in London working in a couple Michelin star restaurants went Down Under. Three hats the top award by Good Food Guide.

Ortiga
The burger is Hamburguesa, a slider of pork and jamon, with pickled Padron pepper, and aioli. It was quite nice, good flavour from the pork and jamon combination, nice home made aioli, Spanish style.

Moo Moo

My final stop was back to Moo Moo Wine Bar and Grill. The burger is available in the bar, cool dark space, relax, lounge music, and a tapas menu. My expectation was high as the steaks there were superb.

Moo Moo
The burger a dry aged Wagyu, bacon, black pepper aioli, mozzarella, and onion rings. Nice flavour, perfectly cooked medium rare, the pepper aioli was nice, the melted mozzarella with the dripping juices a win win situation. The Wagyu flavour was outstanding. Definitely the best one I had.

Dry Aged Wagyu Burger
Plenty of burger options but a cumbersome task, hope I’m not being too picky but definitely the one I would happily eat again and again and again is the Dry Aged Wagyu burger in Moo Moo.

All these burgers remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Shower Head”

Uncle Leo: Look at this, I told them medium rare, it's medium
Jerry: Hey, it happens
Uncle Leo: I bet that cook is an anti-Semite
Jerry: He has no idea who you are
Uncle Leo: They don't just overcook a hamburger, Jerry
Jerry: All right. Anyway, the point I was making before Goerbbles made your hamburger is a man like you could be dating women twenty years younger. Come on Uncle Leo, I've seen the way women look at you. When's the last time you looked in a mirror? You're an Adonis! You've got beautiful features, lovely skin, you're in the prime of your life here, you should be swinging. If I were you I'd tell this Lydia character, it's been real, move back into that bachelor pad and put out a sign; Open for business
Uncle Leo: Believe me, I thought about it. But she is so perfect in every way, I can't see a flaw
Jerry: Well, keep looking
