A place I had to go while in the big apple was Momofuku Ssam. I enjoyed so much Noodle Bar that my first stop when back was another David Chang’s place. A casual loud informal restaurant, opened in 2006, awarded Bib Gourmand by the Michelin guide 2012, and restaurant 37 in the Restaurant Magazine's world 50 best restaurants, do you need more reasons to go?
The place |
Got to the place with Marisol, we were tempted to get the whole rotisserie duck ssam, but desisted at the end and went for a journey through the menu and taste different dishes. We started with the steamed bun, pork belly, hoisin, cucumber, and scallions, it was classic, it was tasty, it was greatness, it was pork belly. Then more pork belly, in a BBQ bun, crispy pork belly, coleslaw, and smoked mayo, even better, seriously what can be better than pork belly, basically crispy and more! Pork belly, no doubts, the coleslaw and mayo played perfectly. Then a dry aged sirloin tartare, with watermelon, radish, spinach, and nori, decomposed presentation, so have fun mixing everything, the nori gives a special crunchiness to the dish.

Next striped bass, kabocha squash curry, green mango, and peanut, nice balance with the mild squash curry, the mango and the peanuts. After that we got the poached chicken, sticky rice, hedgehog mushrooms, and black garlic, nice good flavours, but not the main attraction of the night to be honest. And for desert the pear sorbet, was weirdly nice, a struck of geniality, the sweetness of the sorbet in balance with the power of the blue cheese, and the flakes giving you a crunchy texture, just magic, a tasty fight between sweet and sour.

Definitely any of David Chang's restaurants is a must if you're in Manhattan, high end Asian comfort food.

Usually you have to call in advance to order the duck, that reminds me the Seinfeld episode "The Couch"
Elaine: I heard Poppie's was good, let's go
Jerry: I'm not going there. Didn't he get busted by the Board of Health?
Kramer: That was in the past, Jerry, as it happens, New York Magazine just judged his kitchen to be one of the cleanest in the city. They got a duck there, you think you died and went to heaven
Elaine: Ooh! I love duck, come on, come on!
Kramer: Yeah, but you got to order it two days in advance. You know, I'm going to call him, I'm going to order the duck for you
