The Coffee Inquiry IX: Monmouth - The Borough

Keeping my coffee research in London I got this time to Monmouth in Borough Market. Roasters and coffee traders since 1978, they opened for business in a small store in Monmouth St in Covent Garden, then in 2007 moved the roaster operations to Bermondsey. Monmouth second shop was the The Borough one, opened in 2001, a big shop, where you can buy grinded coffee, coffee beans, or enjoy the different drinks or treats they have, single cone filter, espresso based, pastries, or maybe indulge with truffles. They are really meticulous only using sustainable ingredients, like the milk they source it from Jeff Bowles in Somerset, or the sugar from Assukkar in Costa Rica. That’s in a nutshell what you will find in Monmouth.

Got to the place, market day, big queue, a couple ladies trying to expedite the ordering process asking in advance what would you be drinking. Coffee wholesale not as busy as the drink side, a great thing is they have a vast different types of origins for sale and you can mix your beans to make your own blend.

I ordered a macchiato, the coffee was quite nice, not as strong as I like it but still pretty good, nice aroma, a bit bitter cocoa notes. The espresso blend is a mix between Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala. Latte art a bit lacking, guess my barista was in training.

Mouth reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Glasses”

Kramer: Now look here, see it's right here: Gloria Vanderbilt Collection
George: He sold me ladies' glasses!
Elaine: I think, I think I'm having trouble swallowing. I can't, I can't swallow
Kramer: She's got rabies, just like my friend Bob Sacamano, she's delirious, she's foaming at the mouth!
