Korean Fried Chicken in London [Closed]

My dad was a cook during the Korean War.
Something very bad happened, ever since you can't get him near a kitchen
George Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Fatigues”)

I have been looking for a nice KFC in London. No! I’m not talking about the chain but Korean Fried Chicken. I tried this in Melbourne and loved them immediately. But I finally found one place in London. Jubo is a Korean canteen in Shoreditch. Residence on the Bedroom Bar, classic menu with fried chicken, steak sub, steamed buns, and of course kimchi. I hadn't seen a menu like this since my incursions in Melbourne.

The place
Menu
We went straight to business wings and strips, half soy garlic and half hot & sweet. Great flavours, perfectly cooked crispy and tender, the garlic was the favourite.

KFC
Then some slow cooked pork belly buns, traditional approach, pickle cucumber, hoisin, and sriracha sauce. Really nice, good flavours again.

Buns
Hirata style
Finally the Bulgogi Sub. Bulgogi skirt beef, caramelised onions, peppers, and cheese. Nice, good flavour, served in a soft bun style.

Sub
Jubo is my finger food kind of place, good flavours, nice beer selection, and great fried chicken. I love this new addition to our restaurant circuit. The chicken was so good we kept ordering more and more.

Brixton Chicken Academy

Hey, stay away from the chicken. Bad, bad chicken, mess you up
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Chicken Roaster”)

I love chicken! And believe it or not one of my guilty pleasures when in the USA is Hooters. So I couldn’t resist the opportunity to get some thighs and wings in my last visit to Brixton. No Hooters here in London here but we have our take without the voluptuous waitresses. The place no other than Wishbone, they have been around for a while. Irreverent style matching the Brixton scene, industrial décor, high wooden tables, uncomfortable stools, soul music loud and clear, and a menu based on chicken, thighs, wings, by pieces, and sandwiches.

The place
We went for a trio to try a good selection of the menu. Korean wings, Buffalo thighs, and a Korean sandwich.

Menu
The wings were nice, good spicy touch from the fermented chilli, double fried crispy, quite nice. The thighs were amazing, a perfect American Buffalo style, I started to have all the flashbacks from the past, blue cheese just perfect, definitely the highlight of the day. Finally the sandwich, again good flavours, nice balance, a touch of peanuts, a bit scarce on the chicken, I had to add some of my thighs to the sandwich to upgrade it.

Great option in the area, definitely the thighs are the way to go, at least for me

Korean Fried Chicken the secret of the Colonel [On The Road: Melbourne]

I do like chicken even that in the culinary world is considered a bit of a boring protein. Here in Melbourne there are a couple Korean places that specialised in chicken and beer, what else can be better, probably a baseball match to have the perfect trilogy. Looking for options I got to a post from BurgerMary, where she recommended a place called Gami, funny fact the place is not more than 20 metres from my hotel, so yada yada yada, I ended eating in the place.

The place
Small, simple, and bright, meaning that the lights could illuminate a baseball field. Pretty packed, the only person not Asian in the whole place was probably me. Checked the menu even though I knew the droids I was looking for, they have 3 flavours, original, sweet chilli, and sweet soy garlic source, sources, don’t think is my typo actually the menu says source instead of sauce. BurgerMary in her review quite accurately highlighted not to go for the flavour ones as after a couple bites they get harder to eat, but probably as you will do after reading this, I had to learn from my mistakes, yada yada yada, I got a flavour one.

Inside
Extra source
Decor
I ordered a Hite, Korean beer, a half chicken original flavour, and 6 chicken wings sweet soy garlic. The beer was light and nice, even the slogan is clean and pure. The chicken was great, nicely fried, tender and juicy inside, the wings surprisingly after the second one I couldn't care less for the source, sorry sauce.

Nice place, simple food, finally I discovered the Colonel secret came from Korea, probably Frank Costanza brought the recipe.

Colonel secret?
That reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Fatigues”

George: Dad
Frank: What are you wearing, an athletic sweat suit?
George: What are you doing here?
Kramer: Well, he came by to pick up his check for the banquet hall. You know I got a hundred and eighty-three responses? Oh, it's going to be a rager
Jerry: Kramer, how are you going to cook Jewish delicacies for a hundred and eighty-three people?
Kramer: Yeah, you're right. That's a lot of pupkitz. Hey Frank, you know anybody who can help me cook?
Frank: Cook? No, I don't know any cooks. I don't know anything about cooking!
Kramer: What's the matter with him?
George: My dad was a cook during the Korean War. Something very bad happened, ever since you can't get him near a kitchen
Kramer: Shell-shocked?
George: Oh yeah, but that has nothing to do with it

Escaping the Royal Wedding III: Cardiff Fast Food Special

Before going to Cardiff I asked a friend regarding things to do in the city and he told me that no matter what I had to go to Dorothy’s in Caroline Street locally known as “Chip Alley” and try their speciality Chicken off the bone with chips. So as soon as I had the chance I got to the famous street and head straight to the place which started its business in 1930 and locals crave for its chicken curry special.

Chip Alley

The Place

The street is full of kebab parlours, burger places, fish and chips, etc, just a fast food paradise. Is the kind of place that you will go after a night of drinks with friends to get something tasty and cheap before heading home.

The Counter

I got to the place and put my order of chicken off the bone with chips, which is literally that a bed of chips in top shredded chicken off the bone and to crown the dish a curry sauce, the perfect combination for any hungry costumer late at night.

The specialty chicken off the bone and chips

Not a fine dining but tasty and unique experience from the Wales capital, so if you’re around I will recommend you to pass by and try Dorothy's late night fast food at its best.

Chicken always reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Chicken Roaster”.

Jerry: How's life on the red planet?
Kramer: Its killing me, I can't eat, I can't sleep, all I can see is that giant red sun in the shape of a chicken.
Jerry: Well, did you go down to the Kenny Rogers and complain?
Kramer: Ah, they have me the heave ho. I don't think that Kenny Rogers has any idea what's going on down there.

Burger Wars Episode XXV: The Chicken Menace

I decided to try the Chicken burger at Nando’s. I have been in the place in several occasions but always ended asking for chicken wings or a Peri-Peri chicken. The legendary house of Portuguese Peri-Peri chicken, with many shops around the UK. The specialty flame grilled chicken, with their secret sauce based on spices, herbs, and African birds eye chilli. Each restaurant has its own personality, and the chain holds the largest South African collection in the UK.

The Place

Menu

Sauces

Table

I usually asked for the chicken wings, but this time I decided to give it a try to the chicken breast fillet in pita bread, and added cheese.

Chicken Wings

Pita Chicken Breast Burger

The verdict, not good at all, I love chicken and like a lot Nando’s Peri-Peri chicken and the chicken wings which are quite good, but the chicken breast pitta was completely dry, and the breast is too small for the pita bread, so most of the time I was eating bread with salad. The cheese was plain cheddar which gives no personality.

The damage, 9.20 quids for the chicken burger, chips, and a coke.

The conclusion, I will go back to Nando’s but will keep with the chicken wings or the Peri-Peri chicken, the chips aren't bad and with the Peri-Peri salt is an interesting combination. I will have to give them a disappointing 4 in my scale to the South African chain.

Chicken chains remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Chicken Roaster”.

Jerry: What's going on in there?
Kramer: What?
Jerry: The light!
Kramer: Oh the red, its the chicken roaster sign, its right across my window.
Jerry: Can't you shut the shades?
Kramer: They are shut.
