Aussie Brunch in London

I'm back in London but just for a week before I return down under, and the first invitation to catch up I got was from Sarah to go have brunch in an Australian café. All the places in London we got to an Aussie one. The place no other than Salvation Jane, sister of Lantana. Open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch, and share plates and drinks during the evening.

The place is modern, nice, and rustic. A decent menu, took me a while to decided, I went for a poached egg on sourdough toast, chorizo, and baked beans with pork belly. The egg was perfectly cooked, runny yolk, nice, some rocket leaves to give peppery to the mix, the beans and pork belly was nice, good flavour, and the chorizo, well it’s pretty difficult to mess it up right, put it on a griddle or hot plate, and keep the juices.

Burger Wars Episode XI: The Burger with Son

The other day I was in Moorgate and I remembered that a couple times I had a pretty decent burger in The Cuban, as a result I decided to give it a try and do the proper research for my hunt of the best burger.

I love the Cuban culture, especially the music, boleros, son, cha cha cha, charanga, danzon, and son. With artists like Cachao, Buena Vista Social Club, Habana Ensemble, Irakere, Bebo Valdes, and Chucho Valdes, I just can’t stop hearing them any chance I have, I think as an amateur latin percussionist the connection is a probably more direct and intimate.

Anyway, I’m guessing the owner of the place isn’t a real Cuban, having pictures of Che Guevara and Fidel, if he likes them so much why he’s not in Habana doing a queue to get food or toilet paper instead of being here in England making money, that’s not very socialists of his part, isn't it?. To be honest that was the only thing that put me off, but let’s not talk about political ideology, let’s talk about our prospect, the pitcher that just defected, and is going to pitch his first game in the Major Leagues the Cuban Burger.

The burger is an 8 oz, prepared fresh every day char grilled and filled with chipotle mayonnaise, onion relish, and beef tomato. The burger comes with hand cut chips, and you can personalise it with bacon, swiss cheese, mature cheddar, jalapenos, guacamole, and fried egg. I ordered mine with bacon and guacamole.

The verdict, excellent flavour, so far the best I have had, beef was medium as order, with a smoky flavour, the chipotle mayo gives it another dimension, the guacamole was pretty decent but I think it could have been better. The fries were big, fat, and crispy just how I love them. In my opinion the starter throw a no-hitter in his first start in the majors.

The conclusion, definitely the best one so far, so if you like it Guantanamera style The Cuban is your place, you can also have a cohiba (Cigar), and drink a cuba libre (rum and coke) or as some people call it a “Mentirita” (little lie), a good selection of Cuban rums, 6 different mojitos and 5 cobination of Caipirinias. I will give them an 8.5 almost flawless. Can’t wait to come back for more and hopefully hearing Chan Chan from Buena Vista Social Club.

All this latin experience made me remember the Seinfeld episode “The Puerto Rican Day” were the gang gets stock in a traffic jam due to the parade.

Kramer: Okay, here's the deal. He wants you to acknowledge that you cut him off with an "I'm sorry" wave.

Jerry: What's that?

Kramer: You raise the hand, lower the head “I'm sorry, I'm sorry”. The buttons are really big on the car. I don't understand it. I haven't read the manual. Ooh!" You get my drift.
