Coffee Enquiry XV: Kopapa - Let’s do Brunch in Covent Garden

There is nothing better than a lazy Sunday brunch. I love the ritual, waking up late, taking a magazine or a book, and finally heading to get some eggs and a nice macchiato at 2pm without feeling guilty. One of my favourite places to do all that is Providores therefore I really wanted to try their sister restaurant Kopapa. All day café, relax, a decent bar with stools and plenty of tables but no high communal table as in Marylebone. Located in the Seven Dials open seven days a week all days from breakfast to post theatre supper, serving the same Peter Gordon’s cuisine with a similar if not the same menu.

The place
Got to the place and already new what I was having the Turkish eggs. For me that is the best dish that Providores has on the menu and the best breakfast/brunch dish I have tried in London. Marisol went for the choriso hash with 2 fried eggs, rocket, shallots, and sriracha chilli sauce.

The greatest Turkish Eggs
Some Chorizo for the Hash
The Turkish eggs where spot on as usual, amazing flavour the yogurty poached eggs with the spicy kick of the hot chilli butter, unbelievable! I could eat those every weekend. Chorizo hash was nice I got a few bites, it was well prepared well, eggs perfectly cooked, nice flavours.

The Hash
Now let’s talk about the coffee. You can’t have brunch without having coffee, at least I can’t. So I went for not one but two of them. I got my macchiato as soon as I sat and before leaving a flat white.

Macchiato time
Monmouth tailored blend, I don’t recall liking that much the Monmouth beans. Kopapa's beans are roasted specially for them. All the beans sourced from Brazil, Guatemala, and Colombia. Really nice after taste of the coffee, no latte art for the macchiato but nicely done for the flat white, top marks for a really nice coffee.

Nice coffee, great brunch, and same quality as Providores.

Eggs remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Stand-In”

George: So how were the eggs?
Daphne: Eggs are eggs
George: Eggs are eggs. That is very profound. By the same token you could say fish is fish. Ha ha ha, I don't think so

Coffee Enquiry XII: The Providores, All you need is Brunch!

Back in London, and decided to have brunch in one of my favourite places The Providores. The place is always packed, long queues, high turnover, quick and good service, but more important consistent good food and great coffee.

Rarotongan Tapa Cloth
Brunch, Brunch, Brunch!

Got to the place with Marisol. 20min queue not too bad for the place. Got our table at the back of the tapa room, had a quick view to the menu. Tragedia! we wanted the same thing, Turkish eggs. Yes the two “spoiler alert” amazing poached eggs with whipped yoghurt, and hot chilli butter with sourdough. I picked the short straw, so I had the tapa room fry-up. Two poached eggs, buttered sourdough, smoked streaky bacon, sautéed buttered mushrooms, and slow roasted tomatoes. Then as side black pudding.

Ready for brunch
Turkish eggs the star of the brunch
The food was great, the Turkish eggs amazing, the spicy edge of the yoghurty eggs, brilliant. One of the best dishes I have tried as I just stole a couple bites. The fry-up was good, nice eggs, well executed, runny yolk, classic combination. And the black pudding was amazing, not too dry, good flavour.

Now to the coffee part!

They sell their coffee beans blend if you want. It’s sourced from Volcano, the small batch gourmet coffee roasters. I ordered my usual macchiato, straight forward, great coffee, no latte art, strong and powerful notes.

Kramer: Well, you're getting heavy. Yeah, you look like you put on five, ten pounds
Jerry: Kramer!
Kramer: I'll tell you something else, you're looking a little chunky yourself, buddy
Jerry: Me?
Kramer: Yeah
Jerry: No
Elaine: Where's your bathroom scale? Oh my god, I've gained seven pounds
Jerry: I've gained eight
Kramer: I told you
Elaine: Oh, my god! A couple, but 7 pounds. How did I gain 7 pounds?
Jerry: How did I gain eight?
Elaine I don't get it. I've been doing the same exercises. I haven't been eating anything different
Jerry: Me, either. Wait a second. Wait a second. Maybe it's that yoghurt
Kramer No, no, no. That's hundred percent yogurt
Jerry: Well, how else could this have happened?
Kramer Well, maybe it's the Oreos
Elaine: I don't eat Oreos
Kramer: You don't eat Oreos? The way you break them open? You're practically having sex with them
Jerry: What about me?
Kramer: You? You're getting old
Jerry: Maybe your yoghurt isn't so non-fat
Kramer: Oh, guess again, tubby!

Tapa Brunch

Since I moved to SW19 I have been looking for a place to have brunch in west London. I was relaxed in a comfort zone with the usual spot in east London near London Fields, but it was time to find a new place near from home.

The Place

Surfing the net I found that The Providores does a tapas brunch. I’ve been in the place in previous opportunities, and the tapas I tried were good, but a tapas breakfast/brunch was a new concept for me.

The Menu

So I went to the breakfast bar in their tapa room, they don’t take reservation so I got a little bit early, the place full as usual, got me no more than 10 minutes to get two sits in the room decorated with the huge Rarotongan Tapa cloth hanging from the wall.

Coffee Time

I oredered a fry-up, grilled smokey streaky bacon, sauteed buttered field mushrooms, slow roasted tomatoes with two poached eggs, and buttered sourdough. Just excelent as expected. Definetely coming back for more, in conclusion I can properly say that Providores will be my new brunch shack in the future.

Fry Up

Brunch reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Invitations” where Jerry gets engaged with Jeannie.

Jerry: I'll just have a cup of coffee.
Jeannie: Bowl of Corn flakes.
Jerry: More cereals? that's your third bowl today, you had it for breakfast and lunch.
Jeannie: Hey! So what's the deal with brunch , I mean that if it's a combination of breakfast and lunch. How comes there's no lupper or no linner.
