A Turkish named TAS

Double dipped? What are you talking about?
George Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Implant”)

Usually if you want good Turkish food you end up in Dalston. But I found good reviews about TAS, an Anatolian Turkish cuisine in Waterloo. The place opened in 1999, and now they have more than 15 restaurants. The place was completely packed, happy faces, a loud and noisy atmosphere impregnated with great aromas.

The Place
The best way to eat Turkish cuisine is sharing so we ordered a several dishes to play with. We started with some cold and hot meze. The Cacik was great, I loved the mint, cucumber, and garlicky yoghurt base dip, full of flavour. Then the hummus kavurma, amazing, topped with sautéed lamb it’s like a hummus reloaded. The kalamar, a battered marinated squid, good, nicely done. Kanat, some chicken wings, ok no fuss no glory. Finally, the icli kofte, lovely, great flavours of these lamb and wheat balls.

For the main show we got their mixed grill, the Iskender, great flavours. The scallop cooked with onions, and cabbage in a wine creamy sauce, it was definitely the weakest link of the night, the scallops were miniature, almost baby scallops, and a bit dry. Then we moved to Hunkar Begendi, grilled aubergine puree with cheese and of course lamb, really good, nice flavours and good combination. Finally as a side the great Bademli, a lovely almond rice that I couldn’t stop eating.

A great night, good service, and lovely food. Highly recommended if you want to avoid the trip to Dalston.

The Best Kebab in London

There's this voice inside of me going "You're doing it! You're doing it!" And then she started to cry, and I weakened a bit, I almost relented, but the voice, Jerry, the voice said "Keep going, keep going. You're almost out!" It's like I was making a prison break, you know. And I'm heading for the wall, and I trip and I twist my ankle, and they throw the light on you, you know
George Costanza (Seinfeld episode “The Ex Girlfriend”)

That’s probably a difficult title to get. There are so many places, basically every corner you have a kebab parlour, you can get this mix grills and kebabs from established Indian  restaurants like the famous Tayyabs to the local joints that opens till late nights like Flame. One recommendation I usually got from my good friend Talyor was Bosphorus Kebabs in South Kensington. I’ve been there a couple times so it was about time to write a review.

The Place
The menu
Bosphorus is a Turkish Kebab Restaurant that opened in 1974. High quality fresh produce is their only secret, they prepare their chicken and lamb daily. The way to go it’s the mix grilled, lamb and chicken shish, lamb kofte, and doner kebab toppings. The grill is fresh, nice flavours, good seasoning, and good value, everything you would expect to have.

The shish
The grill
They are open until 12pm so if you want to try fresh kebabs head to South Kensington, are they the best kebab in London? Probably not but they are quite good.

Turkish Cuisine in Ladbroke Grove

I love Turkish cuisine, the thing is for Venezuelan we call Turkish to anything from that region including Lebanese or Syrian, not so good in our diversity and inclusion, I apologise for that! But what I like in London is pretty specific and you know exactly what kind of Middle Eastern cuisine you’re having.

Menu
The Place
A place near Notting Hill is Fez Mangal, traditional Turkish cuisine, focusing on authentic Turkish BBQ. I was with a colleague that lives nearby and he recommended ordering dinner there as a take away. We ordered a mixed meze, chicken wings, yugurtlu shish chicken, and a lamb beyti.

Meze
Pitta
Shish
The food was quite good, tasty, nice smoky and coal flavour from the charcoal grill, the shish and the meze were excellent, It’s pretty close to Dalston’s Numara Bos Cirrik, and believe me that is something.

BBQ
Not sure why but Fez reminds me “The Pez Dispenser” Seinfeld episode.

Elaine: Well, I'm sure it wasn't at you
Noel: Well then, what was she laughing at?
Jerry: Pez?
Noel: Uh, no, No thank you. Did you see her?
George: Me, uh, uh, no
Jerry: Anyone who would laugh at a recital is probably some sort of lunatic anyway. I mean only a sick twisted mind could be that rude and ignorant
Elaine: Maybe some mental defective put something stupid on her leg
Jerry: Even if this so called mental defective did put something on her leg she's still the one who laughed
Noel: I'll never forget that laugh for the rest of my life

Mahmut where is my Kebab?

Until a couple days before going to Berlin I didn’t know that the inventor of the Doner Kebab was Mahmut Aygun, and moreover he invented it in Berlin. The Kebab King as he was known probably desperate to get rid quickly of drunken Berliners at the wee hours, decided in an act of desperation to put their traditional Turkish Kebab which was by that time served in a dish with rice to be served inside a bread, genious isn’t he?

Rotisserie at Hasir, I wonder if Mahmut said Donner I'm your Father Star Wars Style

So on March 2nd 1971 at the Hasir restaurant in West Berlin Mahmut stroke pure gold. As you can imagine I couldn’t resist to try one of these babies in their birthplace. I did a little bit of research, The visit to Hasir one was for sure, but it might be that some other curious Turkish street food provider went a step forward into Kebab evolution, so after many days of intensive research, and I mean googling and checking every Berlin tour guide I had the time and chance to check I found a contender.

What a name, convenient located in Mitte (exactly in Scheunenviertel) not far if you’re having drinks in Prenzlauer Berg. Got to the place and asked for a special one. I guess the difference in the special was a white cheese he added. It was amazing, highly recommended, what struck me as divine intervention was the bread, is not the typical pitta kind we are used to get in London and in NY with the Kebabs, Shawarmas, and Gyros, no it’s thicker and has this amazing texture that plays great with the meat, the salad, the sauces, and in this case the cheese.

Hasir the immortal one

Got to Hasir on a rainy day in Berlin, opposed to London apparently rainy days are not so often. Sat on a table, and after having mixed thoughts I decided to eat like a civilised human being, also Tony  Bourdain again trick me into that as I watched his show as usual before my trip and he got this amazing red lentils soup. So asked for the soup and a Iskender Kebab. Soup was glorious, and the Kebab excellent, the Iskender came with yoghurt and a spicy tomato based sauce.

Inside, the queue for the Take Away

Both were really good, location wise probably Schlemmerbuffet is the best one, but Hasir is pure history and also has 6 locations around Berlin.

Turkey reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Secret Code”.

Jerry: Alright, you're locked up in a prison in Turkey, I have your wallet. The only way I can bribe the guards to get you out is for you to give me your ATM code.
George: Call the Embassy.
Jerry: They're closed.
George: Why?
Jerry: Bomb threat.
George: We're in Turkey?
Jerry: Midnight Express, my friend.
George: My card won't work there; they're not on the Plus system.

Come on baby light my Fire in Wimbledon

I’ve been spending more time in my home turf these days. The good thing about that is that you discover places that you are not aware of, one of them is Flame, a unpretentious, fast food, authentic shawarma place, and according to them the best in town. The place looks like an ER, is so clean and shiny you could perform there a open heart surgery.

The Place

No tables, long counter showing all the victims you can have, and a big grill besides the two massive vertical rotisseries. The big rush of the place is after 12 when people in the area start to leave the local pubs and clubs.

So Many Choices

I usually ask for a shish plate instead of the shawarma, and this time was no different, a mix shish wrap and also as I was hungry I got falafels. The falafels were good, nice flavour, and not too greasy which is the best you can achieve in these kind of joints. The mix shish was excellent, nice flavours, well season the meat, and the garlic sauce giving a nice touch.

The Rotisseries

Falafel

The Shish Shawarma

I reckon I will be having some late night food encounters with Flame in the future, nice flavours, simple food, convenient location, and closing late.

This rock n’ roll experience reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Stock Tip

Kramer: Hey, can I use your place? I got a bunch of friends coming over this weekend.
Jerry: What friends?
Kramer: Well, it's just some people I met at a rock concert. Do you mind if they use your bed? Because they're really good people, Jerry. I'm telling you. You know, they're anarchists. They're... they're... they're... huge.

A Turkish Lunch in East London

Last week was my friend Armando’s birthday, so we spend the day in east London. We ended having lunch in one of the Turkish places in Dalston, there are so many of them, and he has tried a couple ones, but this one was a new one as his first option was closed. The place 19 Numara Bos Cirrik, serving Anatolian cuisine in an open charcoal grill or Ocakbasi, the offer simple, tasty mezzes, fresh baked breads, and chargrilled marinated meats, fish, and vegetables.

The Place

Menu

Ocakbasi

For starters we got the Karisik Meze (mixed meze), Falafel, and Kalamar Tava (sauteed calamari). It was perfect, the flavours were there, the food was perfectly cooked, the aromas, spot on.

Falafel

Meze

Calamari

For main I got the Tavuk Sis Yogurtlu which is chicken shish with garlic yogurt sauce. Again amazing, the yogurt was special giving a good balance for the garlic chicken.

 Pickle Onion

Chicken Shish

The only down note of the whole meal was the service, it was dreadful, is like we were begging to be served, our waiter was slow, with a really bad attitude, just the kind of guy you won’t have in front of the house, he even didn’t let us splitting the bill in different cards so made my friends to look for money in the ATM machine, it was just absurd. However, the food was so good that I really don’t care, just ignore him and enjoy the food which is perfect. This Turkey place gave me hope that not only fancy restaurants are serving amazing food, it is refreshing to discover humble places doing a great job.

After leaving the place my friend told us to try the best baklava in town, the place was literally beside Tugra Baklava, I’m not a sweet tooth person, but after Armando’s continuous persistence I decided to tried it, again OMG... it was superb, the best one I have had period.

Tugra

Turkey reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Secret Code” when George doesn’t want to share his ATM code.

Jerry: Alright, you're locked up in a prison in Turkey, I have your wallet. The only way I can bribe the guards to get you out is for you to give me your ATM code.
George: Call the Embassy.
Jerry: They're closed.
George: Why?
