Let’s go Wine Tasting [On The Road: Napa]

In my life I have travelled a lot, I can proudly say I have been in 6 of the 7 continents missing only Antarctica, and I'm completely confident that the coolest, fun, and probably most enjoyable trip I have ever done so far was to Napa Valley with the gang. We got together 6 friends including significant others, living in 4 different countries for a two days trip to the wine region.

Lovely Heather was in charge of the logistics, and she was brilliant, the itinerary couldn't be better, perfect for a chaotic and disorganised group as we are. Napa vineyards date back to the nineteenth century, some of them are still operating, but in the 60s was when they raised as a first rank wine region.

Ze Ladies!
We started our trip with some bubbles, yes let’s get fizz at Domaine Chandon, we browse around a bit, but let’s face it, this was our first place, so we were desperate to get some tasting going on, or should I say drinking going in some cases. The varietals they grow are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two of the three traditional French Champagne varietals.

Domaine Chandon
We went straight to etoile restaurant in the winery, award winning restaurant, only fine dining within a winery in Napa, and chef Perry Hoffman was awarded best new chef by Food & Wine. We got bottles of the etoile Brut, Rose, and the Tete de Cuve. A great start, all were brilliant, my favourite definitely the Tete de Cuve which is a winery exclusive.

Our second stop was in Robert Mondavi winery, the first major winery built in Napa post prohibition era, he opened his winery after he was fired from the family winery Krug over a fight with his little brother. We did the proper tour of the winery, 75 minutes following the path of the grave from the vineyard, to the cellar, to the finished wine. We had to wait for our tour but free of charge we were able to try most of their wines, including the original Fume Blanc Robert created in 1966.

Our third stop a last for the first day was Castello di Amorosa, 121 thousand square foot 13th century Tuscan castle/winery that opened in 2007. Having visited castles around Europe Amorosa looks a bit tacky, we didn't take the tour as the general entry gives you access to most of the areas and you can try some wines as well, at that point half of the group didn’t know even their names, having said that we continue with the wine tasting mission, the entry gives you to try 5 wines but our friendly bartender in the main tasting bar gave us a couple more so we could try a bit more of the set of wines they commercialise.

Next day, new batteries, and ready for more wine, we got to Reynolds Family Winery, Heather reserved a private tasting there, the more family style winery we visited, less commercial than the other ones, we got the reserve flight tasting, went through their wines, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Persistence (Bordeaux blend) and Reserve Cabernet.

Our next stop was Clos Du Val, founded by two French wine businessman who travelled the world for two years looking for land to produce Bordeaux style wine, finally they settled in Stags Leap District. For this one what instead of paying for the taste each, we put the money together and bought the bottles that were in the tasting. Great day, we went to the yard, sat in a table, got some cheese and charcuterie and enjoyed the wine while relaxing contemplating the vineyards.

Our final stop was Sterling Vineyards, the winery has a cable car, in order to get to the top of the hill where it’s located. Greek inspired architecture, outstanding views of the valley, a self-guided tour so you go at your own pace, and you taste 5 different wines, for $5 more you can have additional tasting of their reserve wines, and $10 more you can have single vineyards and limited release wines a great ending for our trip.

All these wines remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Soup”

George: I did it! It's all done!
Jerry: Hey
George: I did it. Hun, we're going out as soon as she gets off of work and it'll still be daytime. You know I, I'm much better in the daytime than I am at night, it's less pressure
Jerry: I love the day date. No wine, No shower
George: Yeah

The Coffee Inquiry V: Tate Restaurant & Best of British Tasting

Probably the place I frequent most in London is the Tate Modern. Even to spend time reading a book or just wandering around. On the Level 6 they have their restaurant, long bar, panoramic breathtaking views from the London skyline, floor to ceiling windows.

The view
Long panoramic bar
So during a private viewing of Munch I took the time to go for a coffee and enjoy the view. Ordered a macchiato, and my friend Ana a latte, nice coffee, not too strong, the beans they are using it’s a special blend from a Coffee Roasterie in Brixton, which I assume should be Coleman Coffee Roasters

To end the day, wandering around a half empty Tate, I got to an event Best of British Wine Tasting, they selected and offer the chance to try different cheeses, wine, beers, and cider from British producers.

East side view The Globe
The start of the tasting was Sipsmith another secret recipe, competing with Pimms, notes include lemon verbena, Earl Grey tea and cucumber, extremely nice and addictive.

Sipsmith
A wonderfully prepare drink
Then Kernel Brewery, 4 choices, pale ale, IPA, stout, and a porter, really nice beers, I strongly recommended specially the dark ones.

Kernel
More beers this time Innis & Gunn, a revelation, I loved the flavour of their special Rum Cask, strong rum notes as the beer is aged in Rum oak barrels, a must to try, I liked so much that I have my fridge full of those babies these days.

The revelation I&G
Finally some wine and sparkling, Limney 2011 vintage from Davenport Vineyards in East Sussex lovely Blanc de Blancs to end with a Pinot Noir rose Brut from Camel Valley in Cornwall.

Wine time
Life couldn’t be better, wait there was a lovely selection of British cheeses to join the tasting.

Cheese! George Cheese!

Flight Attendant: We have some delicious Chateaubriand, my personal favourite. Or, if you prefer something lighter, a poached Dover sole in a delicate white wine sauce with just a hint of saffron
Jerry: Oh, saffron! That sounds good
Flight Attendant: And today we're featuring wines from the Tuscany region
Jerry & Tia: Tuscany!

Road Trip: Take me to the Wine Cellar Please!

My friends gave two options for Sunday in Milano, the first one was driving to Maranello and seeing the Ferrari museum, the second one was going with a group of Italians near Pavia to a Vineyard and visit their cellars. Obviously as any amateur foodie the option was clear, I wanted to drink wine!

All roads lead to Rome
A day in the countryside, the vineyard we went was Azienda Agricola La Piotta, nearby Pavia in Moltalto Pavese, a nice small town, we explore the surroundings, got some roasted chestnuts, and headed to the place, the owners came to explain the how they operate and the extension of the vineyard and finally we went inside to try the different wines and eat some local food.

Nuts
More nuts
You basically have two options, drink as much as you want with no food, only some salami and cheese as snack basically free of charge, or to pay 5 euros for also a plate of lentils and cotechino which is an Italian charcuterie similar to salami but needs to be cooked. It was so cheap we didn’t even think to order the food. We tried every bottle they had, Pinot Nero, Chardonnay, Barbera, Spumante. The wine was amazing and the food tasty and you can’t get it more authentic. This is why I love Italy.

Wine reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Dinner Party”

Elaine: Maybe we should stop off on the way and get a bottle of wine or something
George: What for?
Elaine: These people invited us for dinner. We have to bring something
George: Why?
Elaine: Because it's rude, otherwise
George: You mean just going there because I'm invited, that's rude?
Elaine: Yeah
George: So you're telling me instead of being happy to see me they're going to be upset because I didn't bring anything. You see what I'm saying?
Jerry: The fabric of society is very complex George
George: I don't even drink wine. I drink Pepsi
Elaine: You can't bring Pepsi
George: Why not?
Elaine: Because we're adults?
George: You telling me that wine is better than Pepsi? Huh, no way wine is better than Pepsi
Jerry: I'm telling you George, I don't think we want to walk in there and put a big plastic jug of Pepsi on the table
George: I just don't like the ideas that every time there is a dinner invitation there's this annoying little chore that goes along with it
Jerry: You know, you're getting to be an annoying little chore yourself

Wine Connoisseurs

A couple of my friends are entrepreneurs. I really admire them to bet in their ideas and running their businesses instead of working for any corporation, the list goes all over, travel agency, franchise, batting centre, sport store, and more recent a wine shop.

The Place (courtesy Blanco & Gomez Wine Merchants LTD)

Blanco & Gomez is a small, cozy, and well supplied independent wine shop in Chelsea. They have an excellent selection of wines including French, Italian, USA, Australian, South African, South American and other regions. You will be received by one of the two owners Carlos or Jo and they will happily recommend an appropriate wine for you, as they have taste most of the wines they sell.

Some of their wine selection

As a plus they usually have free wine tastings in the shop during the weekends so you can try different wines they sell, and also they organise pop up dinners pairing wines with food for a ridiculous price for the experience. To know more about their events you can go to their facebook group.
