One of my last burgers in Melbourne was in Rockpool Bar & Grill. Neil Perry’s venture in Melbourne, one of Australia’s leading chefs with restaurants in three cities. Three in Melbourne, another three in Sydney, and one in Perth. The place a modern bar & grill, fully booked, I had to wait for a table in the wine room, as that’s the place where they serve the burger.
I sat at the bar and grab a Victoria pils, ordered a couple starters, including a fresh Oyster with Mignonette sauce and cured ocean trout served on toasted brioche. Quite nice, the fresh trout was excellent, nice sweet touch and good balance. The oyster was simply freshly shucked as you would expect.
Then finally the main event of the night, David Blackmore’s Full Blood Wagyu burger with Bacon, Gruyere Cheese and Zuni Pickle. It was excellent, nice sweet notes, the Wagyu flavour was top, perfectly cooked medium rare, nice balance with the Gruyere and the crispy bacon. Definitely an amazing burger. It came with onion rings that were superb. They had this spicy touch on the battered just perfect.
Bar reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Trip”
George: I don't want to tell you how to run your show
George Wendt: Oh, of course not
George: But really, it's enough with the bar already
George Wendt: Yeah, well
George: Seriously, have they though about changing the setting?
George Wendt: Doubt it, I doubt it. Yeah
George: Really? Because people do meet in places besides a bar, huh?
George Wendt: Well yeah, they do, heh heh
George: What about a rec room? Huh? Or a community centre
George Wendt: Yeah, you ought to write one of those
George: Yeah?
George Wendt: Yeah, I'll bring it up with the producers, I got to…
George: Fabulous, I'll think about that George, thank you!
