Burger Wars Episode LXXXV: The Attack of the Wookie or Bear [BurgeReview]

I also got Astounding Bear Attacks
Cosmo Kramer (Seinfeld episode “The Andrea Doria”)

Burger Bear is an acclaimed burger pop up and stall vendor. In the past winner of burger Monday championship, and these days everyone waiting for the opening of his roof in Shoreditch after a successful kickstarter campaign. Not too easy to catch Tom Reany, but after months of continuously checking his whereabouts finally he went to a decent central place for #bbqbootcamp in Southbank.

Burger Monkey Bear Menu
The burger a special one with collaboration from Monkey Shoulder whisky. American cheese, crispy double smoked bacon, and Monkey bacon jam.

Burger Time
The verdict, just superb. The burger was amazing, I don't like too much sweet twists but the bacon jam was extremely good

The damage, 8.50 quid for the special, no fries no whisky

The conclusion, Tom’s burgers are great. Highly recommended, they are big and full of flavours. Everything perfectly executed for a flawless burger. I will give the Bear a solid 9 over 10

The Rock Burger [On The Road/BurgeReview: Melbourne]

One of my last burgers in Melbourne was in Rockpool Bar & Grill. Neil Perry’s venture in Melbourne, one of Australia’s leading chefs with restaurants in three cities. Three in Melbourne, another three in Sydney, and one in Perth. The place a modern bar & grill, fully booked, I had to wait for a table in the wine room, as that’s the place where they serve the burger.

Rockpool
Dry Aged
I sat at the bar and grab a Victoria pils, ordered a couple starters, including a fresh Oyster with Mignonette sauce and cured ocean trout served on toasted brioche. Quite nice, the fresh trout was excellent, nice sweet touch and good balance. The oyster was simply freshly shucked as you would expect.

Trout
Then finally the main event of the night, David Blackmore’s Full Blood Wagyu burger with Bacon, Gruyere Cheese and Zuni Pickle. It was excellent, nice sweet notes, the Wagyu flavour was top, perfectly cooked medium rare, nice balance with the Gruyere and the crispy bacon. Definitely an amazing burger. It came with onion rings that were superb. They had this spicy touch on the battered just perfect.

George: I don't want to tell you how to run your show
George Wendt: Oh, of course not
George: But really, it's enough with the bar already
George Wendt: Yeah, well
George: Seriously, have they though about changing the setting?
George Wendt: Doubt it, I doubt it. Yeah
George: Really? Because people do meet in places besides a bar, huh?
George Wendt: Well yeah, they do, heh heh
George: What about a rec room? Huh? Or a community centre
George Wendt: Yeah, you ought to write one of those
George: Yeah?
George Wendt: Yeah, I'll bring it up with the producers, I got to…
George: Fabulous, I'll think about that George, thank you!

Australian Footy and Seafood in Southbank [On The Road: Melbourne]

I was invited by our local colleagues to a game of Australian Football League or Footy, huge event, full house in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Collingwood vs Hawthorn, an entertaining evening full of beer and meat pies.

AFL
After the game we decided to go and walk around the Southbank to have a bite. A couple minutes studying our options we went for a good looking place named Waterfront. Seafood place as you might have guessed, owned by the Zampenis family originally from Greece, and al fresco dining on a terrace.

Southbank
Dinning room
Saw the menu and I went for 14 hour cooked pork belly, seared scallop, soy ginger glaze, and apple puree, sounds good right, well sadly the belly was chewy, on the other hand the scallop was perfectly cooked, overall ok to good. A colleague went for the salt and pepper calamari, and odd greyish colour, nicely battered and good flavour.

Pork belly
Calamari
For main I went for the swordfish, Queensland tiger prawn, black and white sesame seeds, and Vietnamese salad. I didn’t get the sign from the waitress as I asked what she recommended between the swordfish or the lobster and salmon wellington, she recommended the lobster risotto. Anyway big mistake went for the swordfish and was completely overcooked then it was laying over a bed of cabbage and carrots with no purpouse whatsoever, pretty disappointing.

Swordfish
So much potential, terrible delivery.

Greece reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Bizarro Jerry”

Jerry: She had man-hands
Elaine: Man, hands?
Jerry: The hands of a man. It's like a creature out of Greek Mythology, I mean, she was like part woman, part horrible beast
Elaine: Would you, prefer it, if she had, no hands at all?
Jerry: Would she have hooks?
Elaine: Do uh, do hooks make it more attractive, Jerry?
Jerry: Kind of cool looking

Ribs in London

The last couple weeks Southbank area has been busy, first the Thames Festival, then the Real Food Market including Kappacasein stall as a regular in the market, and most recently the Real Food Harvest Festival. Good opportunity to see a couple chef demos, producers, live music, and of course plenty of food stalls. As a regular of the area wandering around was a sure option but it became a must after Jay Rayner tweeted about yummy ribs he got in the festival.

Busy Southbank

One of the many Chef Demos

The Rib Man offers the best ribs in London. But who is the Rib Man? Butcher since 15 years old, now a cook who starts his day at 3am preparing his weber bbq to be ready to serve his first client at 9am. Usually known by his family as Mark Gevaux. Usually located in Brick Lane market on Sundays, the savory victims to try full racks of babyback ribs, half racks, rib meat rolls, and rib meat wraps. All the meat sourced from Norfolk and Suffolk farms.

The Stall in Southbank

Got to the place looking desperately for the stall, anxious to try their ribs. And after a little hesitation and contemplation of the Rib Man in action shredding rib racks for the rolls and wraps, I went for the Rib Roll on top a little of the special hot sauce. The ribs are superb, magnificent, brilliant, I'm running out of adjectives. I still remember Rayner’s comment of Yum! Well let me tell you that’s short for the taste of those ribs. I loved the fact that he kept the roll in a griddle, making the bread crunchy, the perfect combination, and the sauce don’t get me started, amazing with the ribs.

Mind the roll

I see in my future many Sundays in Brick Lane having ribs in all forms, full, half, rolls, wraps, just hit me. 5 quids per roll a bargain full of flavour.

My Tasty Victim

Ribs remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Boyfriend” one of my favourites with the parody of the JFK movie.

Jerry: Unfortunately the immutable laws of physics contradict the whole premise of your account. Allow me to reconstruct this if I may for Miss Benes as I've heard this story a number of times. Newman, Kramer, if you'll indulge me. According to your story Keith passes you and starts walking up the ramp then you say you were struck on the right temple. The spit then proceeds to ricochet off the temple striking Newman between the third and forth rib. The spit then came off the rib turned and hit Newman in the right wrist causing him to drop his baseball cap. The spit then splashed off the wrist, Pauses in mid air mind you makes a left turn and lands on Newman's left thigh. That is one magic luggie.
Newman: Well that's the way it happened
Jerry: What happened to your head when you got hit?
Kramer: Well. uh, well my head went back and to the left
Jerry: Again
Kramer: Back and to the left
Jerry: Back and to the left Back and to the left
Elaine: So, what are you saying?
Jerry: I am saying that the spit could not have come from behind, that there had to have been a second spitter behind the bushes on the gravelly road. If the spitter was behind you as you claimed that would have caused your head to pitch forward.
Elaine: So the spit could have only come from the front and to the right.
Jerry: But that is not what they would have you believe.
Newman: I'm leaving. Jerry's a nut.
Kramer: Wait, wait...
Jerry: The sad thing is we may never know the real truth.

The Mistery of Kappacasein

I went the other day with a friend to Borough market to introduce to him one of the best sandwich in London, not other than the grilled cheese on Poilane sourdough bread, Montgomery cheddar, Bermondsey hard pressed cheese, onions, leeks, and garlic, yes I suppose you guessed correctly, Kappacasein. What was my surprise they weren’t at their usual stall?

The Stall in Southbank Centre Real Food Festival

The Dark Side of the Cheese

Disappointed I almost forgot the incident until recently during the Thames Festival when I bumped into their stall at the Southbank centre. Yes they are there for the Real Food Market and I couldn’t resist the temptation to get one, and asked them what happened with the original spot. Well according to the staff apparently they had issues with the market and are in conversation to return to it, however if you go to their website they state that their new home is in Bermondsey, further investigation and inquisition to the staff revealed that they will be in the Southbank centre a couple more weeks, and will have an answer regarding Borough within the next weeks.

Raclette Magic

Toaster Magic

The Options

Hopefully the grilled cheese sandwich which is almost an institution for Londoners will come back to their usual whereabouts, if not we will have now to commute a little bit further than London Bridge to have that greatness flavour of sourdough and cheese toasted until perfection.

The Delight

Full of Flavour

This missing/lost situation reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Maid” when Kramer is lost downtown NYC.

Kramer: I think it's over. We had a big fight, she threw me out, I started walking, and now I'm lost downtown! I don't have any money. I don't recognize anybody. I miss home, and I don't even know how to get there.
Jerry: What's around you?
Kramer: I'm looking at Ray's Pizza. You know where that is?
Jerry: Is it Famous Ray's?
Kramer: No. It's Original Ray's.
Jerry: Famous Original Ray's?
Kramer: It's just Original, Jerry!
Jerry: Well, what street are you on?
Kramer: Hey, I'm on first and first. How can the same street intersect with itself? I must be at the nexus of the universe.
Jerry: Just wait there. I'll pick you up, and, Kramer, stay alive no matter what occurs, I will find you!
Kramer: Aah!

An Indian Pop Up

I think I mentioned before pop up restaurants were on trend in these days. Well one of them is Dishoom Chowpatty Beach Bar. I have wanted to go to Dishoom, and the other day with a colleague while walking in Southbank I mentioned to give it a try to the Indian fast food beach style concept.

The Place

The Long Bar

Lamps

The place was originally to be opened until October 4th. However, the bartender mentioned they might close in October redecorate and open again as it has been a great success. In effect this mental restaurateurs put sand and a hut in the middle of the Southbank centre, who would thought in a rainy city like London with usually a very short summer this idea will work, apparently it did.

Beach Style

The menu is simple, Naan rolls, snacks, meals, and some sweets. And in the blue corner there is quite a good selection of drinks, including Gola Ice (Bombay’s favourite Ice Treat in two versions virgin or naughty).

Bollywood Style

I ordered the Dishoom Frankie (spicy lamb minced in a naan roll), Dishoom Calamari (fried with lime and chilli, and Chicken Ruby (home style curry). To kill the thirst a Thumbs Up which is Bombay’s best cola. The Frankie was ok, nice flavour, but nothing mind blowing. The chicken curry on the other side was great, really nice and tasty, and the calamari was superb, I could eat only that the whole day.

Bombay's cola

Calamari

Chicken Curry

Frankie Roll

Samosa

So if you’re in a pop up state of mind don’t miss this Indian and try the calamari before they close in October as they might change the menu.

Lunch Time

India reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Betrayal”.

Sue Ellen Mischke: Elaine? Oh! Oh, I am so happy to see you!
Elaine: You are?
Sue Ellen Mischke: Well, of course. No one else was even willing to come to India. I mean, not even Pinter's parents and they're Indian.
