A Cold Feast with Coffee Enquiry XVI

London is keeping the pace and hype with the street food events. Not so long ago Feast brought another version of their festival. This time the venue was the amazing Tobacco Dock, they are improving the place with every event. The place an impressive 19th century warehouse, nice traders, and good organisation. Sadly really cold would have been great for a summer event if we get a summer here in the UK this year.

The Dock
My victims for this event were:

I really was looking forward for this trader. I have heard a lot about their chicken and so far no luck to be able to try it. The Spit & Roast team came with their chicken bap. Spicy Korean sauce, buttermilk chicken, fennel slaw, all together in a bap. Awesome, couldn’t be better, the chicken perfectly cooked crispy and tender, nicely balanced, I definitely need to eat more often this buttermilk chicken.

The Hoxton Square rustic restaurant with a menu around artisan British food. Their offer for the event braised shin of beef and a cauliflower soup. I went for the soup and actually got the last portion of the day as it was completely sold out. Well the soup was creamy, great seasoning, good flavours, with all the reasons to be sold out. If the rest of their dishes are similar Monikers is a place to check in the future.

My third stop was Rita’s for more chicken bap. The Dalston pop up place that I have been trying to visit. Their bap was also buttermilk chicken but different battered and seasoning, nice spicy sauce, good flavours. It’s hard and sometimes unfair to compare but I kind of like more Spit & Roast’s bap.

My friends the Pilgrims are always present in these events with their nice rustic pizza. I went for my favourite the Nduja, nice flavours, same good quality.

The seasonal supperclub, rooftop style in the summer and heater ready for the winter. They came with their Fonduta fingers. Fontal cheese and slow roasted smoked loin of pork in ciabatta bread. The cheese is a nuttier, younger, and softer version of the Fontina called Fontal. The grilled ciabatta cheese sandwich was ok. Good flavour, a nice melted cheese, nice flavour from the pork. I have to say it was the weaker dish I ate during the day.

Coffee Enquiry XVI: Caravan on the road

I ended the day with a coffee from Caravan. The only coffee vendors at the place. Really nice flat white, creamy, good flavour from the coffee, nice punch, and even a latte art. Their blend comes from Arabica beans roasted by them.

This entire chicken feast reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Chicken Roaster”

Jerry: Seth, you're the manager, can't you turn off that sign?
Seth: Jerry I lied. I'm just an assistant manager. Number sixty seven, family feast
Newman: Number 67, right here, right here!
Jerry: Hello Newman
Newman: Hello Jerry
Seth: And don't forget your steamed broccoli
Jerry: Hold it. Broccoli? Newman, you wouldn't eat broccoli if it was deep fried in chocolate sauce
Newman: I love broccoli, it’s, good for you
Jerry: Really? Then maybe you'd like to have a piece?
Newman: Gladly… Vile weed!
Jerry: It's Kramer isn't it? I knew it! The greasy doorknob the constant licking of the fingers, he's hooked to the chicken isn't he?

They Feast London

It might be really late when you read this review as Feast London Festival it’s only for 3 days but it’s superb and I felt obligated to write the review, hopefully someone will read these lines and decide to give it a go.

The Place
Food markets and festivals are increasing in London, the success of The Long Table last year, and other approaches as Eat St have been really well received by Londoners. This year for only for 3 days from Friday 3 August to Sunday 5, Feast reunited the best London restaurants in one open yard, and make them go street food style. Names such as Anchor & Hope, Bahmi11, Barbecoa, Bread Street Kitchen, Hawksmoor, Jose Pizarro, Moro, St John Bread and Wine, Pizza Pilgrims, Yum Bun, Patty and Bun, and many others.

Seating arrangements
The place St Thomas St in The Quad, Guy’s Hospital, 6 quid if you buy the ticket online, 8 on the door, they have tickets on the door so if it’s sold out online I will recommend to go early and you will be able to buy and enjoy the Feast.

The Quad
I try to eat as much as I can, started with St John’s pig head’s stew, it was great, the meat, the combination of peas and radish, and to end the touch of the walnut paste was perfect.

Then I had smoked salmon from Hansen & Lydersen, they explain how they started in 1923, and took his old family recipe, bringing to London smoke salmon. What I tasted was a top quality delicate salmon.

Then moved to a quick chat and a nice Napoli Salami pizza with my Pizza Pilgrims friends, James in charge of the house, delivering consistent great rustic pizza as usual.

I couldn't leave without trying Jose Pizarro gazpacho, fresh, nicely balance, it was great, definitely one of the best options in the yard, also had the chance to chat with Jose for a while about Iberico ham and the top quality products he’s using in his two restaurants Jose and Pizarro.

End the day with Anchor & Hope chopped mustard rabbit and romesco, it was superb, great flavour, top quality, also in the podium for best food of the day.

A friend of mine got Patty and Bun’s Ari Gold burger after I recommended, and he was amazed, top quality as usual, the juices, the sauce. Also ceviche is becoming more popular in London, and their representation was The Last Days of Pisco, apparently quite good as well.

Not everything is food, so you can enjoy some gin, beer, and other spirits, I got a couple of Meantime lager thanks to Background Bars.

Drink time
A must if you’re in town, don’t miss it, hopefully it’s not too late when you read this.

Festivals remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Strike”

Kruger: How about George?
Frank: Good thinking, Kruger. Until you pin me, George, Festivus is not over!
George: Oh, please, somebody, stop this!
Frank: Let's rumble!
Estelle: I think you can take him, Georgie!
George: Oh, come on! Be sensible
Frank: Stop crying, and fight your father!
George: Ow! Ow! I give, I give! Uncle!
Frank: This is the best Festivus ever!

Pizza from Calabria to London [Street Food]

If you love pizza you have to try Thom, James, and Louis venture, no other than Pizza Pilgrims. Probably you have read it before in many posts from other food bloggers but here it goes again. The pilgrims decided to go on a venture and opening a pizza food truck or should I say Piaggio Ape van. They went to Italy specifically to Reggio to buy, pick up the three wheeled van and bring it back to the UK, a real pizza pilgrimage, six weeks, stopping in several places in their way north, including Calabria, Basilicata, Campania, Lazio, Tuscana, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, and Piemonte, learning recipes and the traditional art of pizza making, that is what I call an adventure.

The Pilgrims
The stall
They are now residents of the Berwick St market in Soho, and you probably will find them in many festivals as well. I visited them a couple days ago, rainy and particularly windy day, James and Louis where on charge, that was the first day that the three of them where officially full time on the pizza business. They offer me shelter inside the stall, and I decided to go for the Nduja pizza which wasn’t on the menu but they gladly sort me out.

Day's menu
Nduja on the making
Have to say this is the real thing, it’s rustic, it’s tasty, it breaths Italy and traditional pizza all over, the flavour is spot on, the right amount of tomato sauce, a great mozzarella, the fresh basil touch, everything is just right there as it should. The Nduja was great the right amount of heat not to overcome the flavour.

Final product
Before leaving James offer me to try a slice of his lunch a salsicce e friarielli (salami, wild broccoli, in a bianca base), it was great, nice flavour again.

Salsicce e friarielli
If you like pizza and happen to be in London the pilgrims are a must.

Pizza reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Coach”

Poppie: Use your wrist! It's all in the wrist. Not too high!
Kramer: Alright, put a little sauce on here, some cheese
Poppie: Not too much!
Kramer: And... Cucumbers!
Poppie: Wait a second, what is that?
Kramer: It's cucumbers
Poppie: No, no, you can't put cucumbers on a pizza
Kramer: Well, why not? I like cucumbers
Poppie: That's not a pizza. It'll taste terrible
Kramer: But that's the idea, you make your own pie
Poppie: Yes, but we cannot give the people the right to choose any topping they want! Now on this issue there can be no debate
Kramer: What gives you the right to tell me how I would make my pie?
Poppie: Because it's a pizza!
Kramer: It's not a pizza until it comes out of the oven!
Poppie: It's a pizza the moment you put your fists in the dough!
Kramer: No, it isn't!
Poppie: Yes, it is!
