Burger Wars Episode LX: P&B has a new home [BurgeReview]

I remember the time when Patty & Bun was doing his pop up in Doodle Bar or even the days of the Endurance pub. The charismatic and friendly Joe working hard to give London his take on a burger, probably the same initiative that created movements such as Meatwagon before becoming a mass production.

P&B
The place
Similar menu from the beginning with a couple twists. Six burgers, wings, and fries. New location in Marylebone area, a small place with first in first serve policy. Industrial style with cardboard art, strong burger aromas, and some sort of disco music as background.

Burger Art
I had tried in the past the Ari so I decided to get another one this time. But Marisol and I wanted the same burger, at the end we decided to share halves and order the Smokey Robinson with cheese, caramelised onions, bacon, P&B smokey mayo, on a brioche. And the Jose Jose Chilli burger, cheese, chilli chorizo relish, pickled onions, P&B smokey mayo, on a brioche bun.

The order
We also shared the smoked confit wings with BBQ sauce and spring onions. They were good, but I have to say the ones in The Endurance and even in early days at the Doodle Bar were much better. Maybe a bad day? Not sure.

Wing time
Smokey time
The verdict, great burgers, they were juicy and perfectly cooked. My favourite of the two is the Jose Jose. The chilli chorizo is amazing, gives depth and plays excellent with the cheese.

The damage, 10.5 quid for the burger and rosemary salt chips

The conclusion, amazing burger, old school, these babies are for purist that want their burgers messy, full of melted cheese everywhere, a real explosion of flavour. One of my favourite burgers in town these days. The chips need a bit of work, I’m sure they can do better there. A solid 9 for P&B if he solve the chip mystery it will be a perfect score.

Patty reminds me the Seinfeld episode “Serenity Now”

Jerry: Damn it, they gave me cream! I asked for nonfat milk!
Patty: I think they have 1% over there
Jerry: 1%? They can kiss 1% of my ass!
Patty: OK, Jerry, enough. I'm not buying it
Jerry: You're damn right you're not buying it!
Patty: You shouldn't have to try. It's just being open
Jerry: I'm open. There's just nothing in there
Patty: Uh huh
Jerry: Oh, you think I'm lying about this?
Patty: I think you are
Jerry: Well, I'm not
Patty: Yes, you are, liar
Jerry: Oh, stop it
Patty: OK, liar
Jerry: That's enough!
Patty: Ooh, that was good
Jerry: Really? It felt good

They Feast London

It might be really late when you read this review as Feast London Festival it’s only for 3 days but it’s superb and I felt obligated to write the review, hopefully someone will read these lines and decide to give it a go.

The Place
Food markets and festivals are increasing in London, the success of The Long Table last year, and other approaches as Eat St have been really well received by Londoners. This year for only for 3 days from Friday 3 August to Sunday 5, Feast reunited the best London restaurants in one open yard, and make them go street food style. Names such as Anchor & Hope, Bahmi11, Barbecoa, Bread Street Kitchen, Hawksmoor, Jose Pizarro, Moro, St John Bread and Wine, Pizza Pilgrims, Yum Bun, Patty and Bun, and many others.

Seating arrangements
The place St Thomas St in The Quad, Guy’s Hospital, 6 quid if you buy the ticket online, 8 on the door, they have tickets on the door so if it’s sold out online I will recommend to go early and you will be able to buy and enjoy the Feast.

The Quad
I try to eat as much as I can, started with St John’s pig head’s stew, it was great, the meat, the combination of peas and radish, and to end the touch of the walnut paste was perfect.

St John's menu
Stew time
Then I had smoked salmon from Hansen & Lydersen, they explain how they started in 1923, and took his old family recipe, bringing to London smoke salmon. What I tasted was a top quality delicate salmon.

Then moved to a quick chat and a nice Napoli Salami pizza with my Pizza Pilgrims friends, James in charge of the house, delivering consistent great rustic pizza as usual.

Also fresh half dozen of Oysters, delicious brought to you buy Borough Market residents Wright Brothers

I couldn't leave without trying Jose Pizarro gazpacho, fresh, nicely balance, it was great, definitely one of the best options in the yard, also had the chance to chat with Jose for a while about Iberico ham and the top quality products he’s using in his two restaurants Jose and Pizarro.

End the day with Anchor & Hope chopped mustard rabbit and romesco, it was superb, great flavour, top quality, also in the podium for best food of the day.

A friend of mine got Patty and Bun’s Ari Gold burger after I recommended, and he was amazed, top quality as usual, the juices, the sauce. Also ceviche is becoming more popular in London, and their representation was The Last Days of Pisco, apparently quite good as well.

Not everything is food, so you can enjoy some gin, beer, and other spirits, I got a couple of Meantime lager thanks to Background Bars.

Drink time
A must if you’re in town, don’t miss it, hopefully it’s not too late when you read this.

Festivals remind me the Seinfeld episode “The Strike”

Kruger: How about George?
Frank: Good thinking, Kruger. Until you pin me, George, Festivus is not over!
George: Oh, please, somebody, stop this!
Frank: Let's rumble!
Estelle: I think you can take him, Georgie!
George: Oh, come on! Be sensible
Frank: Stop crying, and fight your father!
George: Ow! Ow! I give, I give! Uncle!
Frank: This is the best Festivus ever!

Burger Wars Episode LI: The Entourage [BurgeReview]

The place now buzzing on twitter is no other than Patty & Bun. Pop up concept, passed by The Doodle Bar in collaboration with Street Kitchen and more recently The Endurance pub, classic British pub, loud music, animal decorations on the walls, the bar in the centre, and a good selection of beers. Joe Grossman the man behind the venture did a lot of research in the US, his inspiration apparently was bringing to London a Shake Shack style.

The Endurance
Current venue
P&B
Inside
The options, 5 burgers 3 beef, 1 chicken, and a vegetarian one, chicken wings and chips. I went for the Ari Gold, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions, ketchup, smokey P&B mayo, and I add bacon to the mix, everything on a brioche bun.

Menu

Rosemary & Salt Chips
Burger Time
The verdict, awesome, flavour is spot on, the burger is messy, juices all over so prepare to get dirty, the special mayo is pretty good, the pickled onions a nice touch, the meaty bacon, everything is excellent, pretty nice balance. Fries were ok, a bit on the salty side. I also couldn't resist having wings, they were superb, the BBQ sauce was perfect.

The damage, 10 quid for the burger and chips.

The conclusion, excellent burger, Joe is doing an amazing job, an brought to London a top version that challenges any of the established places like MEATliquor, Lucky Chip, Elliot’s Cafe, etc. I will give them a solid 9 in my scale.

I introduce to you Ari Gold
The combo
Hurry up as they will be another week in The Endurance, or follow them on twitter to know their next eclectic and interesting venue.

Burger reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Van Buren Boys”

George: Hey, I think I may have found someone for the scholarship
Jerry: Yeah?
George: I'm interviewing all these annoying little overachievers, finally, this kid walks in, Steven Koren a regular guy, likes sports, watches T.V.
Jerry: Is he smart?
George: He knows how to read. And he also knows finishing an entire book doesn't prove anything, and get this, he's into architecture
Jerry: Hey! Just like you pretend to be
George: Yes. With a little guidance, Steven Koren is going to be everything I claim to be, only for real, that's my dream, Jerry
Jerry: I had a dream last night that a hamburger was eating me!

London let’s Doodle

A place I really wanted to go for drinks in the West End was The Doodle Bar. Located in Battersea in an old warehouse, irreverent, with a East End look, and a huge chalkboard so you can express and let go your inner artist. A big bar, with loud music, plenty of doodlers, Street Kitchen in command of the bite area during lunch time, and if you were lucky enough Patty & Bun did a stop for months there before moving to his new pop up in Soho at the Endurance pub. Even an arts and event space Testbed1 is in the compound, and if that’s not enough a ping pong table is available in the premises.

I went with a couple friends we got plenty of booze, and had the chance to try Patty & Bun chicken wings and Trip chips with rosemary salt which were superb, one of the best wings I have had, and the fries Heston style, crispy cutting glass outside and soft inside. Sadly the burgers sold out when I went for food, but I’m planning visiting their new pop up pretty soon.

The only food I could get

A must if you want to have fun in the west side of town, couple beers, scribble a bit, ad enjoy the music.

If you want to know more about the Patty & Bun watch this documentary prepared by 12 Flavours of London, and hurry up if you want to catch them in The Endurance as they will be there apparently for two more weeks only.

Doodle reminds me the Seinfeld episode “The Doodle”

George: Don't you see what this is?
Jerry: Yeah! It's a doodle
George: Yeah, a doodle of me, look at the size of the nose, the ears, all my features are distorted
Jerry: Oh! It's an affectionate caricature
George: I'm grotesque, I look like a troll
Jerry: It's just a drawing
George: Don't you see what this says? How can you possibly like somebody, if you think they look like this?
